i got a problem! i put my newly aquired tech 2 wheel on the other day, and when i tightened it up, i must of put the nut on slightly pissed, and its cross threaded the thread on the steering shaft.

i had to take the wheel back off and put back on about 3-4 times to try and line the bloody thing up straight (im so shit at that!!) and now the thread is REALLY f*cked!! the worst thing is, the steering wheel has alot of play in it, and it still isnt on bloody straight!!!

so, im not sure if i should re-tap the thread (but im not sure if i've got a big enough tap-and-die tool for the job!) or if i should replace the steering column?!

if i had to replace it, what parts do i need replace? and how much of a pita is it gonna be???

Oh dear, sorry to hear this.

I am told the collumn is not to hard to replace (for who though?!) and they will only set you back about 40 quid. You dont want the wheel to fail at the wrong moment :? . Just ask Ali to do it, im sure he will be more than happy

Only difficulty changing the column is dealing with the anti theft bolts at the top bracket. Mig welder usualy sorts them out, but think where you put the welder earth clamp.

If the thread's completely bu**ered, I don't see you've got much choice.
Get a second hand column and change over the key barrel.

you can change a diff where you cant see the bolts yet you screw up putting a wheel on? I think you should work blind in future!!! :P lol

I'd suggest changing the colomn though mate, doesnt look like too much of a bitch to be honest so just go for it

When I picked up my iS, some knobhead had taken the steering wheel and left an ordinary plastic E30 one on the passenger seat. Unfortunately, they didn't leave the nut!
Had to drive 80 miles just pushing the wheel on! Believe me, you don't want that nut coming loose.

yeah thats what i'm afraid of!!

i think i'll have to get a new column! B*LL*CKS....

im gonna have a go at die-ing a new thread, and if that doesnt go to plan, then i'll just have to get a new column! although, i think i should get a new column in my hands before i die the thread, as it may not work out right, then i'll be off the road!!

does anyone wanna sell me a steering colomn?! please...

For the safeness of your own life and other's, replace the column!
