No doubt Brian will know but can anyone tell me:

A) What this/these are and;

B) If these were full (and I mean full) of water and rusty, would this cause central locking problems?

Just to give you more info, ive been searching through the technical forum posts, trying to sort out my central locking prob. I went to do the red/black wire thing (which I couldn't find) and came across this (pic 1) it was behind the speaker tucked in the cavity.

I unplugged it and water was p1ssing out everywhere. All the terminals were green with a build up of crap. Upon closer examination of the smaller box, all the insides were totally clogged up with rusty sludge and falling apart. (pic 2)

Thanks, Hopefully I can finally get to the bottom of my central locking fault :?

I cant believe how soaked it was, not sure how the water is getting in there, the car is totally rust free so its not as if its a turd with loads of holes in it.

right so i need a new one of those, and a shower cap :D

The biggest box is the locking ECU and the smaller one is the interior light delay unit.
Looking at the pics, I would say that there is a good chance that this might just be affecting your central locking!!
Don't look for how to stop water getting in there - it's supposed to. Try to work out why it's not draining out.

Brian,

Thanks for that, where is it supposed to drain to?

Brian,

Taking out this Ecu unit (awaiting a replacement)......would this cause the drivers door to become permanently locked. Not being able to unlock via key or inside pulling the pin?

Its strange because, it was fine for the 2 minute drive home, but this morning the bloody thing wouldnt unlock so had to enter and egress via passenger door

Thanks again

Sounds like it's deadlocked. From some previous posts on this subject, it seems that a water logged ECU has a nasty habit of frying all the locking motors before it finaly dies.
Apply 12 volts to the blue and the black wires to work the deadlock motors, but of course they won't work if they're fried.

Yep thats what happened to me kelly. theres a small mechanical fuse in the ECU of some sorts, but of course if it gets wet it wont break the circuit when it gets to hot/overloaded or what not and so all three ofyour actuaters will be friend, easy enough to replace mate i was just lucky enough to have some lying around.

It could be worse - your car could be a Touring!

My ECU got water logged and it fried 6 actuators - 4 doors + tailgate + fuel flap

Parden for stupidness, but is the actuator the thing with a red top and conects to the bar that pushes the pins up?

That's one of them. Others are a different colour depending on where they fit.

replaced ecu and central locking still wont work. Locks fine, but wont even make a noise when trying to unlock!

Anything else i can try?

Got a set here if you need any!

Ive changed the drivers door one, which made no difference. Didnt think it would be those as they are actually working by locking.

The ecu doesnt make any noise when trying to unlock which it does when its locking....but like I said, ive replaced that (unless I replaced it for another f**ked one! :( )

I had a similar issue on a few of my issues, I took it to an electrician, who bypassed that big BMW relay and created a smaler one, which has never caused a problem oer the 4 years ive had the car
