How easy is it to change it?

I have brought a new one as my key and barrel are shot!

Just wondering how long it will take me, if it has to come off some special way and if the new one go one a certain way.

Thanks

Tom

fairly easy dude.

Insert old key into old ignition
Insert paperclip or very small allen key into the whole just under the key. IIRC, its should be forward of the centre line.
jiggle the key and the clip around abit, and the barrel should just pop out. You may need to turn the key abit.. depends how buggared the barrel/key are.

hope this helps!

If you can actually turn the key in the lock then have a look at this http://www.e30zone.co.uk/modules.php?na ... hnlock.htm

my old lock does not seem to have a hole where the diagram on that link shows there to be, the new lock does.

I can turn the key and what not but need to take off the cover around the steering column, ive unscrewed it but it seems to be stuck at the part by the steering wheel

Help me people please

Tom there are another couple of screws, you need to remove the steering wheel to see them/get to them. (At least I always have, somebody else may know different). 22mm nut in the centre of the steering wheel.

Cheers

Very strange! What age car?
Key has to be in position 1 (first click) to remove the barrel via the hole. Can take a while to do it the first time, but once you get the technique right, it's easy.
The steering lock has to be off to remove the wheel, and the top cover still won't come right off without violence, even with the screws removed, but you should be able to tilt it high enough.
You don't normally have to remoe the covers to change the barrel.

I've looked and the barrel is not the same as the new one ive brought from BMW the new one has the tiny hole mentioned in this post weird eh!

Looks like im going to have to take the steering column off to see how i can get the barrel off.
