Just an update!

My Golf GTI mk1 servo arrived today (bought off Ebay), is fitted on the car with E30 master cylinder. All seems good there.

Went to scrapyard for a few bits, ended up getting manual window mechanisms (my E30 is on a diet).

New rubber fuel hoses fitted, old ones cracked and perished.

Got all the coolant hoses on, rad in and full of water - no leaks yet but putting electric fan on tomorrow and run the engine, then re-torque the head bolts.

Tried tightening up the crank pulley nut with car in gear and nearly pulled it off the ramps and axle stands! Do that later with car on floor and someone pressing the brake pedal!

SUNDAYFitted new fuel hoses and wired in electric fan with automatic and manual switches. All works and engine runs fine (with no exhaust) and no fuel or coolant leaks!

TUESDAYJust (with the welding help of my mate next door) modified my downpipes, made a twin 2 1/8" system to a single Scorpion silencer and fitted it.

Couldn't wait to turn the key and see what it sounded like with an exhaust on it!

IT WON'T FLIPPIN' START NOW!

And then I dropped my fish and chips dinner on the floor!

Now it's gone midnight and I'm covered in oil and dirt, tired, hungry, knackered, not popular with the missus, skint and totally fed up!

Hopefully it'll be something simple, mine didn't want to start to begin with, I did all the usual checks sparks, fuel etc to find the fuel pump relay knackered. Fitted a new one primed the fuel system with a jumper wire, turned the key and bang, fired up first time

If you don't mind me asking where did you get the piping to do the exhaust work?

I hope not, with my 535i E34 rad taking the dizzy cap off is a radiator out job! But it had a BIG spark. And the plugs were wet and I could smell fuel.

It's strange that it ran two days before putting the exhaust on, now it seems to try and go but coughs back slightly through the inlet.

I wondered if it's to do with pulsing gasses in the two pipes being messed up. Would I need a balance pipe or collector at the bottom of the downpipes?!

I got the exhaust tubing from local motor factors APS (I think they just cover the south east), it seems to be harder to get tubing now than it used to be!?

Well it turned out the engine was flooded! Simple as that, I always over-complicate things in my head and think of things that are worse than they turn out to be! At least being a pessimist leaves you with fewer disappointments!

Got a small hole in the passenger side floor welded up too. Do they all go there? as the overflow pipe from the expansion tank runs down to the corner of the sill/floor/bulkhead.

Still lots of little bits to do but I'm all fired up to get it done, not enough hours in the day!

Nice one, Mine wouldn't start at first either......people saying broken this broken that! Turned out, fuel lines wrong way!

I did that before it first started too! I thought the pressure regulator would be on the feed end of the rail, I was wrong! And I was sprayed with fuel when I took the pressurised return pipe off!

I've heard that injected engines with the 'flappy' air flow meter do tend to over-fuel them from cold more than other systems. ???

IT DRIVES!!!

Yes, it has finally made it's maiden voyage around the local estate!

Had trouble even jump starting it but a new battery sorted that out! (after a charge the old one showed 3.8 volts!)

Still work to do, the brakes are shocking! need attention and the stop lights are permanently on, the rear indicators don't work, the temperature guage and 'economy(!)' guage don't work, it has no interior, standard suspension (not for long) but it drives!

The sweet sound of a 'big six' with a single silencer is intoxicating! A few neighbours came out to see what all the noise was about! They had better get used to it!!!

I will get more pics up, when I've got my newly painted roll cage in, the newly painted wheels on, my Corbeaus in and with the suspension when it arrives. Got a few little bits of rust to sort out too!

I'll try and do a sound clip too but not sure how to do that yet!

You need an M20 temp sender to get it work with the E30 clocks, don't worry about the econo gauge as it will only lie to you if you can get it to work any way ?

Are you using the dreaded drum brakes at the mo ?

I'm on discs all round but I think they need another bleeding and discs are rusty, just got home from work and going out to check the rear calipers and fit new rear discs, EBC Greenstuff pads and Goodridge hoses.

As for the economy guage - I probably won't want to know what the mpg is!! Can it be as bad as my RX7 at an average of about 12 mpg?

Well, short/town type trips you will only get about mid to high teens, the M30 seems to take too long to warm up compared to some other engines, it goes up to mid twenty's when not doing short trips, you might see 30+ on a steady long run.

It all depends on your gearing/driving style i guess ?

Uprated disc's/pad's/fluid/hose's are more than enough for most road use, track day's will need bigger brakes though.

Yeah, I'm planning some bigger brakes in the future, if and when I have some money!

Just had the joy of rusty brake pipes, seized calipers, broken bleed screw and stuck fast handbrake shoes. And that was just on one corner! Do the other rear one tomorrow.

Just noticed I've got a leaking expansion tank (cracked where the overflow pipe goes in) and a split radiator!

One of those days I suppose! More scrapyarding and expense for me this weekend! Sorry Mr. bank manager!!!

I've removed alot of wiring that I didn't need and tidied the rest up, scraped off all the sound proofing - surprising how much that lot weighs! and fitted a windscreen washer bottle and motor in the boot. Next job is fitting the newly painted cage (Ford moonstone blue to match the cam cover) and the rest of the interior.

i hate things that don't work too! it's not as bad if you remove them though. eg, my headlight wash/wipes and levellers packed up so i removed everything and replaced the underdash panel with one from a 316!

i used a suzuki vitara washer bottle mounted on the redundant airbox/afm bracket on mine whiich goes quite well, the top rad hose just touches it though....

So far I have removed the front fog lamps, headlamp wash/wipe, ALL soundproofing, electric windows, central locking, mudflaps, sun visors (got a cage), glovebox, excess wiring, boot tidy, m-tech spoiler, tool kit, some bits of minor trim and put a small washer bottle in the boot. Might remove a.b.s. system but haven't decided yet.

My new springs and dampers turned up today too!

I'm being held up at the mo because I can't get the heater working - I'm posting a topic in 'technical help' to try and not deviate from this subject too much! About to pull my hair out over that one though!

I got a set of springs and dampers from a company called Evo Racing.
They were on Ebay and and came from Germany.
I don't suppose they are the best set up but money is a problem for me so at £171 including delivery (and guaranteed for two years) I'm not complaining! Might fit those this weekend.

Still can't get the heater to work!!!

I need to sort the suspension out on mine I have got the bilstein street line kit and its just to soft.
driftboy how long before its on the road bet you cant wait. Have you got the heater hoses on the right way and are the hoses getting hot ? you could still have air in the system.

I'll let you know (Ed) how my suspension is - soon hopefully! Still alot of little jobs to do, and probably some I don't yet know about!
The heater pipes get hot and everything, it's the blower motor I can't get going unless I bypass the relay (I've had another thread running on this in 'technical help' . I think it's to do with the green and black wire to the starter motor. http://www.e30zone.co.uk/modules.php?na ... highlight=

Well I fitted the rear springs and dampers. To be honest it feels by pushing down on the car very squidgy!
Just stripped down a front leg and found that they have sent me the wrong bastad kit!!!

I guess you get the service and professionalism you pay for!

Oh no are you going to send them back. You can get the bilstein street line kit for £199 its not bad for the money I find its a bit soft on the front but if you push down on the front of the car it wont move so it could just be me

I have emailed them to try and sort it out but I've totally lost confidence in them and wish I'd gone for a well known make.

Well things aren't getting any better!
Just found a puddle of atf under the car.
About 20 seconds of investigation revealed a steering rack gaiter full of power steering fluid. Seems my E36 M3Evo rack (an Ebay purchase) was put on Ebay for a good reason by a tosser!

I'm starting to wish I hadn't bothered with this car. The way I'm going it will need a rebuild before it's mot!

Can the rack be fixed or is it scrap ? Have you got the suspension sorted out. Don't give up now.

I won't give up - unless I have a heart attack before it's done, which is quite likely!
The suspension people have emailed me back saying the factory is sending the correct parts, have to wait and see with that.
As far as I know a leak as severe as this one from the rack is terminal (a bit like my credit card balance), I don't think it's a d.i.y. job to change seals in it.
Hopefully someone can correct me and tell me it can be fixed for £1.50!
I know of an E36 M3 in a scrappy, I wonder how much that rack would be.

I've fitted an E34 rad from the donor car. With engine in position 3 it is VERY easy so would like to stick with the set up I've got - just not with a leaking rad!!!

That's what I heard too but gave it a go anyway.
It will only work in position 3 (or further back).
All you need to do is replace the left hand E30 radiator lower mount (the bigger one which clips to the bodywork and sticks out towards the right hand side of the car) with another right hand mount (the very small one) in it's place.
I used the E30 top mounting plastic bracket - with cut down rubbers and simply shortened the E34 top and bottom hoses. Photo taken before hoses were attached!

Put a blow through electric fan on the front of it (had to be put on after fitting the rad from underneath / through the grille).

It is tight to the distributor cap and crank pulley so wouldn't work with the engine further forward!
