As i have and still do. The slating is in perforance terms as thats what alot of us are into on here. There are a fair few who like the other aspects of E30's on here and most of us who have the faster cars started of with 1.8's and 1.6's

Isn't it "survival of the fittest"?

The more cars that get broken, the more the good ones are worth. End of.

I don't think we are getting to a stag yet where we have very few models.

When we get to that stag (probably around 2008) people will stop breaking and restore.

Is it any wonder why people are breaking cars when they are worth so little whole? I have seen ok IS's go for under £300 on ebay.

Mine while tattty isn't that bad a car, is doing pretty badly on ebay at the mo. Could get way more if I broke it. (don't have time though..)

survival of the fittest yes,,, though i think the argument here is the fact that perfectly decent cars get broken just to make money...

sometimes its the only way to get your money back as people wont pay your asking price as people valve their cars beyond what its worth
and i see it as it let other people buy stuff to do they cars up ie like tec bogykits, leather and stuff

How many E30's are being restored to there original specifications. They are restoring them in germany and they have a section on the e30.de site for help with restoration. I am modding my cab but there is part of me that thinks I am wrong doing it and should have restored it.

I agree that a lot of perfectly good cars are being broken to make a bit of cash, and it's a shame. I like to see all BMWs kept on the road rather than being used as a cash cow. With E28s, E30s and E34s falling into the hands of owners who don't care and/or don't have the money to maintain them properly, this is sadly going to happen.

However, I will agree with jcjdavis1 that there is an almost dislike on this forum of anything with four cylinders that's not an "is". There's also an equal dislike on this forum of anything not modified. One of the rarest E30s (certainly on this forum) is probably an unmodified 4 cylinder with no extras. When was the last time you saw a totally standard M10 engined E30?

It's not just 325i SEs that will be classics in the future - there are loads of them, it'll be rare stuff like standard 316 and 318 carbs with no sunroof and two doors too! What won't be a classic is a botched shed, anything standard transplanted (i.e. 316i -> 325i, but a 335i might as well might a V12 transplant) and anything rusty.

To me a restored car is one that is put back as it left the show room.

Got to disagree with you there mate, the majority of people on here can appreciate a standard car, if you look in the photo section im sure you will find very few (if any) negative comments on a standard 318 etc.

Your perceived disliking of standard cars on here is due to one thing - there were millions made, all exactly the same and people like to see something different. I would certainly be more inclined to comment on something thats a bit different, wouldnt you?

Also, i think your being a bit generous with your classic status. They made millions of ford mondeo's but i cant see them ever becoming a classic car. Same with some E30's IMO

Just my thoughts, im always ready to admit im wrong :D

I can only use my own example but this seems to reflect what most people have said already. I have two 318is's at the moment - one which I have owned for years (in excellent condition, high spec, fsh etc etc) and one which is running ok and in decent nick but will never really be a high value example. If my main car develops an expensive problem, I can justify the expense, but for the second car, I would have to seriously look at the cost, especially when the car is probably not worth more than £750 to start with.

I scrapped an accident damaged IS earlier this year for this very reason - It would have probably have taken at least twice the value of the car to repair it and get it back on the road in good condition. I can't see it really being worth it at the moment unless the car has sentimental value to the owner as you could go out and buy a better car to start with to restore for less money.

Classic car "status" and value is determined not by what the best car is necessarily, but also by amount of vehicles left. As the smaller engined poorly specced cars are scrapped and the big engined, well specced cars are cherished, there will end up being very few smaller engined low spec models which will push their prices up.

As for wanting a 6 cylinder example instead of my 4 cylinder one, I'm not so sure. The M10 is probably the strongest engine to be put in the E30. It's simple, easy to work on and economic. it doesn't really have many weak points and I apprecitate it's enginerring quality. I also don't want electric this, that and the other as I like things simple. It means they invariably work longer and are easier to fix if they go wrong.

I agree with you on the status but are you seriously saying you can see a time when a 318 with no options will go for more money than a full spec 325?

I have an m40 318i, nice and simple, room enough to climb into the engine bay to work on it, the m20 320i I has was lovely to drive (nice to hear a hearty growl rather that a tappetty chug) but the ebgine was crammed in with no room to work on it.

I have a very low miles E-reg 2dr 318i that has been standing almost 2 years but cant bear to break her and cant afford to restore her but if i am still skint by january i will have to break

The e30 is already a classic car http://www.e30.de/classic/cindex.htm
Look at the prices of a good bmw 2002's they go for loads same will happen to the e30.

hmm fair,, but i cant see a 316 or 318 being worth much,,,

only cars that will be worthy of being a classic will be the sport and m3, the IS maybe,,, but just because of extreme scarcity.

I doubt it as the 2002 was a notoriously rusty car and cars were generally less well built then. I think couple that with increasing petrol prices and heavier taxes on high polluters, means old cars will not fetch the premiums they once did.

It really depends on how many are left, if in 20 years there are 500 M3s left, 2000 "is" models, 10000 320/325s, but 700 318i models, 250 323i models and say 100 carb models left, I think you'll be suprised at just how strong the low spec carb models are.

I'd just like to point out that you are all wrong.

The ultimate E30 is the 325i Touring. If you disagree, the basset will chew your legs off (very slowly, and only if she can be bothered).

So there :)

Yes minty 316i's are going for serious money. You can get nearly £1.5K for a good under 70k one. I have personally sold a 316i for £1300, which is more than many 325i / 318is etc etc!

Yep i am tempted to agree, next year I want to buy an e30 "for keeps" I will bring it up to mint and spend a fourtune on her and only take her out on special occasions.

never really been tempted by a 318iS, though would be worth more, so a 325i sport or a 325i touring is my options I think

in 2003 there were just under 1000 registered 318iS on UK roads, i've seen countless fragged and written off since. They are infact rarer than E30 M3's. i don't know how many of these are about.

sports only about 2000 of each model came into the country, i think probably at least 60-70% of them are gone now and most are hanging or in Ireland.

Tourings? seem to be loads of them about still.

How many pina's are on the road?! no one knows how many RHD ones were made, 25-30 is my guess.

This is now, and finding the good examples? Well i think u would struggle big time now, no offence but alot of folks on heres idea of a good E30 isn't either. Most us now are having to settle for the best they can find and spend more money getting them up to scratch. I've had to on both my sport and alpina.

Hi I agree that it is a shame to break up saveable cars for profit but that is the way of the world.
I have spent a few pounds on my M40 keeping it up to standard if I thought it was a shitter It would be getting sold in the parts section for profit.

nothing wrong with m40 316i or m10's at the end of the day we all have the same interest. I started with a 1990 316i.. then got my 318is.

I will happily treat the is to whatever it needs, it's one of the best cars I have ever owned and I've had a few.

Dark sounds, you should of re-built that Is. it wouldnt of been expensive at all PM me and will give you the details of my 316i and what happened to that.

It's a real shame so many are getting broken my mates 318is is ragged to fuck rusty as hell yet he thinks it's much better than it is, he'll keep it until it goes pop and then probably scrap it, he canes the living daylights out the thing, waste of time telling him now.

I'd be interested to see what kind of numbers are on the road now regarding the is and M3 is there any way to find out?
Bollocks to this 24v scrap!

tourings do indeed rock,i obviously prefer modified motors but i like to think im improving on bmw's original idea rather than defacing it,like i said before its just a tin box that im using to keep my engine in at the moment :D
