About half way through my European grand tour, the right rear shock started making a "KLUNKING" noise when hitting bumps...

I took off the trim at the rear and had a look at the top of the unit, the rubber ring that sits between the inner and outer parts of the shock had broken away, and seemed to be allowing metal to metal contact.

Jacked that wheel up and there was no abnormal play (wheel and susp unit still fitted tight)

anyways, I paced it with a sock or two and did 3000miles on it, but now I think its needing to be repared..

any idea what's causing the problem or how hard/expensive it is to fix?

Get some E46 Cab top mounts on there... - Also check your carrier bushes. :)

yeah, its the rear top mount mate. remove the 2 13mm nuts, and the 17mm/18mm nut from the bottom of the shock and remove the shock from the vehicle. buzz off the top nut, and put a new top mount on there.

i'll suggest using E46 M3 rear top mounts, its a common mod on here. they're much stiffer and more durable. they go straight on too!

Stu its a 19mm bolt holding the bottom of the strut on

alternatives to m3 ones are rogue engineering ones, much more reinforced and dual bushed. can be found at http://www.rogueengineering.com/Merchan ... ory_Code=S

if your running standard shocks though i imagine that the m3 cab ones would do the job :o

Don't you wish there were a knob on the TV to turn up the intelligence? There's one marked 'Brightness', but it doesn't work.
