Hello

My friend is looking for a new car and we have just been to see a 325i Sport. It has a touch of rust on the scuttle panal, about the size of a 1 penny piece. I understand that this is normally just the surface and it rusts from underneath the panal.

He's very interested in the car but if this is going to cost £600+ then he would need to negotiate on the price more. Does anyone have any idea roughly how much he could look to spend removing this rust?

Thanks

Friend of mine recently got a quote for a very similar repair from a good bodyshop, all in was about £275

In the end we cut(carefully)the offending area out and migged in our own repair piece, still needs to be painted but cost a lot less than £275!

Don't lots of places want to take the windscreen and dash out to do it?

If it really is the size of a 10p piece and well away from the windscreen then it shouldn't be that much.

Its just if the rust is going under the windscreen seal...

Which is what it is, we know the windscreen will need to come out to get this sorted. It's between the plastic bit and the windscreen. It's just how much more we are likely to find underneath it.

I hear the scuttle is structural so this needs to be sorted asap.

See if he can pop the plastic panel out to take a look, and you can lift the sill slightly also. If its not too extensive the repair shouldnt be much, however a lot of the cost is the removal and re-fitting of the windscreen despite how extensive the rust.

I suspect if its close to the windcreen, it will also be close to the dash, which you can't weld close to therwise it will melt! Dash out job...

The rust here is caused by a design/materials fault, and is not likely to have spread far. Takes five minutes to remove an E30 windscreen and not a great deal longer to replace it.
Similarly, with the dash, I would think that by removing the centre consoles and unscrewing the two bolts that hold the dash at the appropriate side, you could get enough clearance between metal and plastic to get a heatproof blanket in there and not have any problems

Had this repair done to my iS. It was a windscreen out job, the bodyshop used fireblankets to protect the dash.

a proper repair involves the dash and windscreen out so u can get to both sides

most sports rust there. Just check there isn't any under that bodykit.........
