i asked someone this question recently
if yuo imagine the trigger wheel on your engine has loads of teeth all the way around, one of the teeth is missing , the vr sensor works by using an internal magnet and is placed an inch from the trriggerwheel - the magnet detects when the part of the trigger wheel passes by with no tooth as ther is less of a magnetic current. i think this tells your car crank position or tdc i am not sure
someone with more brains will elaboratre but you get the idea

10/10 for Liam !
its basically the sensor that tells the ECU what rpm , and where in rotation the crankshaft is.
It puts out an A/C waveform for the ECU to decode the relevant info from, this is the complicated bit.
the sensor is mounted on the drivers side of the block at approx 8 O'clock position. to retrofit you'll need to remove the VR itslef ( 5mm allen bolt x1 ) and then remove the stand from the frot of the block, 2 x 13mm M8 iirc ?
you'll need the 60 tooth wheel and front pulleys too massive. should answer your PM

Its in being done now, hopefully back on the road by the weekend
My mechanic hadn't heard of a VR sensor so thought I'd speak to the experts
I'll pm you when its all done, and send you a photo of it in its new home

I've never heard of a VR sensor either. What does VR stand for?massive wrote: My mechanic hadn't heard of a VR sensor so thought I'd speak to the experts![]()
If it is the crank position sensor, then BMW refer to it as a pulse generator.
