What an evening I've had  pulled out of work, down to the junction, tried to pull off and it wouldn't go into bloody gear  never had any shifting issues other than when cold, first could sometimes be a bit stiff until it's warmed up.

I assume the gearbox is cream crackered as it'll still go into 3/4/5/R..

Luckily I have a spare box from doing a conversion, just a pity the M30 isn't ready to go in :(

Do you guys reckon that short shifters could speed up the death of a gearbox? my bro-in-law (engineer) was saying something about short/quick shift could maybe do this :? ..... I'm just waiting for him to say "told you so  "

I doubt it Charlie, If you think of how it works.....All it does is shorten the throw on the gear stick. The action within the gear box is still the same!

Yes, but you move your hand at the same speed thus the actual shift is quicker which might in theory knacker an old M20 box quicker??

I'm just going off what I've been told, I have always seen it the same way as you steve, but when your gearbox suddenly dies it makes you think....

I know but I need this car to get to work in and I was hoping to have it all done to switch it over in a weekend.. quite frustrated by this happening now as I'd sourced downpipes and bought welding gear :D

gearboxes rarely let go like all of a sudden they usually give warning along time before.

Has it got oil in it?

Gearshift has never really been a problem, like I said earlier when cold it was a little stiff in first but when warmed up it was fine, oil level is fine although there is a small leak around the selector rod :(

in theory, a quick shift does put more stress on a gearbox, the length of the throw as standard gives enough time for the syncro's to match speeds, and for it to slip into the next gear, if you shorten the throw, it means your trying to force it into gear before the syncro's are matched up, causing excess wear. and it will not go into gear without the syncro's of each gear being matched.

but as said above, it wouldnt just stop working instantly, it would gradually get worse over time

Mine did just stop working instantly, when I left work it was shifting fine then it just wouldn't go into gear..

Cheers for the breakdown on the theory :thumb:

Will it go into 1st or 2nd with out the engine running? if so i reckon it's a clutch issue...

Tis of course entirely possible that it's part of the selector mechanism that's at fault and not the synchros :(

Nope, 1st and 2nd will not engage but all other gears do.

Could well be :( I supose the only way to find out would to take the box apart.. which I might do just to have a look. Looks like my weekend will be consumed with swapping gearboxs over :?

Hey ho the joys of an older car :D
