wheres the best place to drill a 2cm hole through the bulkhead? i need to drill a hole in order to run some thick power cable through. ideally as close t othe battery as possible? but will that infringe on anything?

Why don't you go to the scrappies and get the power cable from an E30 with a boot mounted battery (all 325i's). This is approx 0 gauge and will run nicely down the driver side all the way to the boot.

drilling the bulkhead is not a good idea its a structural part of the car -

well if ur going to do it i would be tempted to do it in the middle somewhere or maybe expand an existing hole

It's a little hard to explain, but it comes out down under the drivers side boonet catch plate (the one the bonnet roller goes in). It actuall looks like it goes more through the inner wing than the bulkhead, but it does actually go through into the car and not under the wheel arch.dark_sounds wrote:where does this run through?ian332isport wrote:Why don't you go to the scrappies and get the power cable from an E30 with a boot mounted battery (all 325i's). the only hole i can see is the one on the passenger side. this is a pain as it had other wires going throught it anyway..
i might reroute and run the wire underneath the car and up in through the spare wheel well where the second battery will be

hello mate, ive just run some power cable through my car, i drilled the hole just to the right of the clutch cylinder (the one that comes off the pedal) then painted the edge of the hole, fitted a gromet and ran the cable down the drivers side of the centre tunnel under the seat and on to the second battery, hope this helps you out.dark_sounds wrote:the only hole i can see is the one on the passenger side. this is a pain as it had other wires going throught it anyway..

p.s wouldnt recomend running it under the car incase somthing catches it and blows the lot,

Its not a hole until you knock the pre shaped plate out
You may have to scrape some sealer away to see where it is, ive done this to route power cable to the boot before, its an easy job. Just clip the cable along the inner sill into the cable clamps

wiring under the car isnt too bad, as long as its well strapped to the underside.
though the idea of having it by the clutch cylinder, should it ever need changing 0awg is gonna be a pest when its in the way.

ooo didnt see that post. will check it out tommorow in light,, this may mean i can get a move on indeed.
and yes neal... almost there,, though it wont be a proper install, as i dont intend on keeping the car as long as i had initially planned, so just gonna shove it all in until i know what im doing, hence no sound deadening, and no fancy trimming in the boot. though the big ass battery will be there!

Why not just go through the existing hole that is for the wires which run from under the fuse box? They run through a rubber seal - all you'd have do is cut the seal, squeeze the wire through and then seal it back up with silicon.
If you remove the glovebox you'll see it.

What about just in front of the glove box? That seems to be one of the easier ways of getting cables into the cabin as you can pull them straight out from behind the glove box. You can them route them under the dash/carpet without anything being visible in the cabin.

0 awg,,,,
Ben (Fowler) said 0awg should go through if i try hard enough, though not sure, ideally goes down drivers side, so it can reach the battery compartment in the rear if i ever need to run a 3rd batt, and also minimises the length of 0awg, so the voltage carried remains higher and is sustained. also enables the alturnator to do its job properly. by going across the glove box, it means adding another 1meter length which could make all the difference.

You can just about make out the cable underneath the sound deadening (crap phone quality pic)

Anybody that tells you to run it across the bulkhead and through the large grommet doesnt know what theyre on about
This is the most obviously easiest and most conveniant way to route the cable
And factory way
If you want a grommet to fit the hole you should be able to get one from the dealers, they still sell every other grommet
