I've just fitted a new GSF radiator on my 1987 318i M10 and there are what I can only describe as plastic fuseli pasta swirls in my new radiator. They are long plastic rods that hoop over the top of the fins inside and run the length of the radiator. Do these removing? I've not noticed any such thing in the original BMW radiator I took off...

Well I called GSF. And their BMW man said to me that "the design of the radiator was changed approximately five years ago. The bore of the radiator pipes was increased but in order to slow the flow of the water in the radiator down to allow proper cooling they fitted the swirly plastic pieces."

Does this sound plausible?
