I have 2 E34 M5's. One is a very nice condition 3.8 and the other is a not so nice 3.6. Mechanically the 3.6 is excellent, it puts down near enough stock power of 315bhp and the gearbox is still very good.

I can't seem to sell the 3.6 because of the bodywork (damaged door, rusty front wings etc etc, crap paint).

So I'm stuck with a car I can't sell unless it goes for stupidly low money.

You might be able to predict what I'm about to say next......... :D

Should I:

A) Break it and make most of my money back

B) Sort out the bodywork and sell it and lose money

C) Get a nice E30 Sport shell and stick the 3.6 into that

Your views would be appreciated.

Depends on whether you want rid of it or not. Two of the options, the car goes, the other it stays albeit in an E30 shell.

Personally I just seem to chuck good money after bad on all my cars so I would try and fix it.

Another option would be to turn it in a track bitch. Would be great to see a hard driven E34 on track.

either track it, or rip it up and sell the bits other than the engine box etc and translplant the engine into a different chassis

C, but just use an average SE or some thing and make a track slag out of it ?

With your contacts things like suspension/bushs/brakes/etc will be fairly cheap i guess ?

I think Andy has given the best on this.

I might aswell do the slight amount of body work and sell it as a tidy car.

Door, front wings and some Dips magic will see it being a nice car again.

After speaking to Demlot I am well off putting an e38 into an E30. Too many issues.

E28 idea is pretty good though!

if your gonna do it up and make a loss on it - why not let it go cheaper and let the new owner have the hassle of tidying up!

Maybe a new Bootywagon? - I know he only does cabs, but i never seen an e34 cab! :P

There is no getting away from it Dips....your painting it. Where else do I find a decent paint man?

Looks like the sensible thing it to either break it or make it nice again.

Thanks for the opinions guys.

I've only told you this about 10 times.... :D

You want a cheap bodge shop to throw £100 worth of paint on it and get it flirted.

Not necessarily.

Putting paint on isn't what costs. It's the stripping down and prepping. If you don't mind getting your hands dirty and you don't insist on the windows out etc you can get acceptable enough paint quite cheap.

Ben,

The car has cost me quite alot of I;ve spent alot of money on mechanicals.

I had a new clutch the day I bought it and that cost me nearly £500.

The suspension is all H&R/Koni and cost roughly £700 inc bushes.

I am going to speak to Dips about the paint work. Might aswell keep it as the insurance is so cheap on a classic car policy.

I know what will happen if I sell it, the money wil get wasted on something or another so it's better to have a spare "M" car to hand.

One where sky high prices does not necessarily equal good quality.

I've had plenty of cars painted dips. Sometimes if I've wanted a proper job doing I've paid proper money. (e.g. I had my M5 re-painted, that cost more than a good e30 to paint, I had a Mk2 Golf Magazine featured show car painted, again, it was a lot more than £100...). I've also used other less perfectionist bodyshops to put paint on cars I want to sell.

Horses for coures.

£100 will get you a door painted to an acceptable standard if you're just selling the car on. I know, because I've done it on numerous occasions.

Do you think traders spend £1,000s getting their stock painted??

Sal doesn't need half his car painted to sell it. He needs to buy a scrap door for £30 and have it painted and blended into the wing and back door. It will then sell. Nobody buys a car for true value with a caved in door. Little scratches and marks yes, concave doors no.

£100 for door is about right but sal does need more then that because he is fussy and what the car right before he sells it he will go and find every dent and ding knowing him......lol
