I'd opt for the E30 M3 but then again I would say that!!
Never really got the 944 S2.....3 litres and only 4 cylinder. You have to rev them like mad to go anywhere......sounds like an S14 come to mention it.

i would say alpina but the porker is a drivers car too
2.7's can be hairy little things but are not massively quick now but feel it, just have the kudo's though on styling and a reliable tuned M20 lump done already

The Porsches are good cars. Alledgedly perfect 50:50 weight distribution due to the transaxle at the back. The 4 cyl 16v in the S2 is very dull though.
If you go for the Porsche look at Turbos too.
I had a 944 turbo with a chip and a shimmed wastegate. It made 300bhp and 300lb/ft and it felt it. It would pull at 160 like my M5 pulled at 100.
911 and Porsche World Magazine took a 944 turbo, spent £1500 on bolt on mods and pitted it against a £80k 996 Turbo when it was new. The 944 was basically as fast...
I don't think you'll find many proper (German) cars as quick for the money.
