Quick question here for anyone thats had expereience wetsanding and buffing new paint. My camaro was freshout of the booth yesterday, next weekend im going to 1200/1500 the whole car, then probably G10 it, but was wondering somthing about Mops. The mop i use at work is just your normal 2 speed "weights a fking ton" mop, but everytime i watch somthing like American Hotrod, they have large cotton type heads on them, whereas i use the normal 6 inch spong pads.

Whats best on new paint, or is it not going to make much difference?

Also any tips of wet sanding a black car lol :cry: done one panel of black before and it came out ok, but not as good as id of liked

1200 8O

Bit coarse IMO mate, that stuffs for wet-flatting primer before paint.
(or knocking off runs) :)

2000 is best

Ive only ever used sponge pads, best tip I can give you is to use lots and lots of water, keep spraying it onto the panel while flatting to remove anything thats likely to scratch and the same while polishing to keep things cool 8)

add a spot of fairy liquid detergent to the water reduces snagging helps it glide so to speak 8)

Done 2 panels yesterday, brought the mop home from work and done 1500, then some g3 plus some finer stuff. Anyone got some tips of better moping compound? Some bodyshop bloke said G10, im not too clued up on the faracle range

My dad helped me make my pink 318is red again used g10 on a foam mop adding a spot of soapy water the trick is easy does it to avoid swirls and or burning paint he has a variable voltage ac power supply which he si able to adjust the speed of the angle grinder withe the mop on it g10 is quite gentle less harsh than T cut :)

G3 is plenty good enough mate
like appletree said G10 is a finer compound.

You should be able to get a good enough finnish with G3 to just wash off and then wax 8)

I flatted mine off last year, just to remove any trace of 'orange peel' which even factory paint has a bit

I used 1500 paper, and lots of water, followed by Farecla G4 on the mop (with lots of water) followed by 3M Finesse-it on the mop. To remove any buffer swirls that show up under street lights, i then did it by hand with finesse several times, followed by the usual routine with Meguiars.

Finish now looks like glass, well chuffed with it.

you can use 1200 mate trust me i do this every day at work you just need to meke sure that u flat thye 1200 marks out really well with 1500 and then u really should go over that whith a 3M Trizact disc wet on a sander this is 3000 grade then buff it up with g3 u can use g10 but this is only really worth doing on dark colours otherwise id say use g4 and then autoglym wax it cos its the doggs winkeye winkeye

Cheers mate. I noticed even with the 1500 it left a few scratches in once i had mopped it.Might try to get somthing finer for a quick rub over like you say. My cars black, would you recomend g10?

any pics?

i like to flatten it with a 1500 disc dry with a foam backed DA sander nice and slow on the flats, and 1500 wetordry wet on the curvy bits by hand.
to polish it i use a product called "one step dry use" by farecla which you dont need to use any water with, and use a 6" foam buff head, then finish it off with machine glaze and a really soft head on the polishing buff

if your cars been baked then it will be a bit tougher to bring up, and dont worry if flattening marks re-apear after its first wash, they'll come out with another wee tickle with the buff :wink:
