Trying to keep my 86 325i cab as original as possible, well outwardly at least but would a e28 engine be a wortwhile upgrade?.While im here the cicar lighter has never worked since ive had car, tried another e30 one in the socket but still no good, when you push it down it just comes back up.Dont really need it,just want everything on car to work.Have changed fuse, same result.

I would not go for the 2.8 the one you need is the 3.5 and it would be even better if it was from a e34/e32.

the 2.8 m30 is an ok engine i suppose but youd be better going for the 3.5 m30 as its the same amount of effort for much more power.

go with the 3.5l much better, for the lighter check to see if the wires on the back of the socket are seated well mine fell off once and the socket didn't work.

cigar lighters - bend the little clips inside toward the centre slightly and then it will grip the plunger when you push it down - I hope I'm understnding your question correctly.
Disconnect from the power supply before you do this as a metal screwdriver will short circuit if you shove it in the lighter socket. Or you could use a plastic knife or something similar.
