Hi , yet another m30 question !! does anybody know if you need to cut or extend the loom at all when fitting it in an e30 ? i know the pin config. needs looking at just not sure of the length etc.

some fiddling is required around the battery area. i had to extent the coil wires and a few others. the main loom should reach if the ECU is rotated round... you'll see what i mean when you get it all in!

I didn't even extend the coil wires, I just turned the coil round (I had to anyway to avoid my air intake pipe) and moved the earth point on the front strut top. I also cut off the metal tube that holds wires on the inlet/oil filter side of the engine (low down on the side of the block) as it made unplugging and refitting the wires easier there, especially with the e30.de mounting brackets.

it's all just a case of fiddling to get it to fit once the setup is essentially installed i suppose.

driftboy, you coming to the ultimate bmw show? maybe a south convoy should happen?

Yeah, I'm planning on going (as long as I haven't blown my engine or diff or anything else!). Convoy is always good for me because my sense of direction is rubbish and I get lost getting out the garage!!! :roll:

Thanks guys and yes another 335i ,eventually !! just getting bits together at the mo , hope to have an engine in the next couple of weeks ,got the g/box ,loom ,rad etc but the main problem is cash or rather lack of it and my boss being a total :wan: about me doing the job at work as i have no garage and an uphill driveway !! sweating a bit about the steering coupling issue with the e36 rack too !! still its good to know the forum has plenty of 335i brains for me to pick :D

Sounds like a tricky situation with your boss! :bla: !

Good idea to gather parts first, but these type of things can often take longer than planned so be careful - or quick!

Don't forget :-
Electric fan
Engine mounting brackets - and new mounts are a good idea too
M20 engine expansion tank/heater matrix/thermostat housing hose
New water pump is a good idea - a weak point so worth doing with engine out
Propshaft - either E30 M3 or cut and shut E30 and E34 ones - preferably a new rubber guibo too (a 535i one)
535i downpipes (probably will need modifying - and the system)
New power steering hose sealing washers (about £2 a set from BMW)
E36 and E30 steering couplings (to cut and shut)
2x universal steering rack gaiters
Now is obviously a good time to put a new clutch in as well!
The rest depends on what engine position you use / what radiator etc.

They all seem to turn out slightly different!

got the mounting brackets care of karan , been wondering about engine mounts , rumour has you can use m5 ones which are offset , might help the steering clearance problems ? also m3 props seem hard to find ,going to need a diff too , more money :mad: i thought i would have to cut the gear linkage but most people seem to have been lukcy using the m20 one . still we shall see .

Yeah, I used M20 gear linkage, comes out in the right place.

Not heard about M5 mounts but be careful if you using the standard E39 servo as it gets VERY close to the inlet manifold so could cause a problem there (I used a Mk1 Golf GTI servo, and a Mk2 1.3 one will work too with a spacer in the master cylinder).

And I can't find an M3 E30 propshaft either - got ripped off on Ebay! :evil:

Hi ,the brake prob had crossed my mind but i dont think the mounts move it that much ,i had sort of planned on the vw servo anyway ! i was more worried about the affects on the drive line really , anyway cross that bridge when i come to it :mad: its still a way off yet .

If you fit a smaller servo you can move the engine over abit so the exhaust manifold clears the steering.

That is what I have done with my propshaft (as shown in picture).
Do you know what that nut behind the centre bearing on the (rear) E30 section of the prop is for? I left mine off - should I put it back? 8O

It lock's the splines/stops them sliding, not sure but speak to Toby Unna as i think he's not using this lock nut thing ?

Ed, i think i've seen that prop some where before ? :)

I would have thought it's a good thing to allow the two halves of the prop to slide a little!??? :?

I thought the prop had to slide alittle :?
