Paul, fair play to you for trying mate, many people wouldnt even have attempted it!
Personally i love spraying, never actually sprayed with a compressor only aerosol on smallish parts and there is a real nack to it,room temp, dust etc.
I always find that spraying the lacquer is the most difficult, getting it even and not to thick.
When spraying i usually go for about 2 coats primer with a 1200 grit rub down in between and after-then about 3 coats of colour, rub down with 1200 in between but NOT after the final coat-then about 2-3 coats of lacquer on top.
I also use a heat gun to warm over the lacquered area for a while but not too close, then allow to dry overnight!
Next day, lightly go over with 1200 or higher keeping very wet/soapy then dry, quick polish in and done!
Finish is never going to be as good as spray gun job but good results can still be had from a rattle can
Oh and the bigger the panel the harder to get a good finish/blend.
All this info is based on my own experience!
Heres a pic of some SE skirts i painted this week for Benjys car this week-
