Hello guys,
Bit of background first, went to max power yesterday (had a good time not many e30's though 8O ) got caught in traffic on the way back it was bloody hot. the temp gauge was around the top end of the scale but not in the red and lucky for me just as i pulled into my road the coolant light comes on and i see steam coming from under the bonnet!

Had a look and sure enough i see water p**sing out from the top hose, went to the local BMW garage today and ordered a new one around £14 won't get it till tommorw :x

I've taken a few pic's below but i think i'm missing a guard of some sort, near the fan asa it looks very likely that the hose got very hot and sagged and dropped onto the fan.

Has anyone had the same problem? If so did you do any mods to the hose or make up a guard of some sort?

Any help wound be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Rich,

the upper hose should be clipped to the engine lifting eye dude, a cable tie will suffice short term but the pukka clip is the way forward for defo.

its a common fault on the ~M20 units, easily cured though

sounds like you were lucky, makes a nice change : )

Was thinking of doing it myself, but scared of really f**king up the engine.

It's a 320i not sure how much different that is to an IS.

Might order one while i'm there at the beemer garage and give it a go.

They are going to charge me over £250 for parts and labour.
Ouch!

Get a new tensioner pulley for the belt as well. The shafts tend to come loose in the bracket. Also, consider a new water pump.
Looks to me like the whole fan shrioud is missing on this engine

Got mine sorted now but paid £15.50  from the BMW garage.

Was gonna order the timing belt and tensioner pulley from them, but a mate

told me about euro car parts and i got both the belt and pulley, oil filter,

sparkplugs and the damper for the bonnet all for the same price as the BMW

garage was goning to charge about £60.

Now to do the timing belt and pulley without doing any damage!
