im a bit worried about not hearing knocking/detonation as ive no experience with it.. as Jon said il have no problem reconizing it but im thinking in a cab with the roof down engine noise is non-existant not to mention my stereo, not one for entertaining the whole street but i do have it so it drowns out most of the engine and wind noise etc..

My main question is would i feel it? & how loud is it when it happens..

Dont really wanna drive top up stereo down all the time incase i dont hear it...

Gunna take it for a nice run tomoz.. completely waste 20 notes of fuel round the country side to see if i got any problems,is it a case of if it doenst happen then then as a whole its pretty sound? .. obviouly circumstances make difference with being stuck in traffic/hot days etc then pull away with boost would be a no no but as a whole a good fast test tomoz should enlighting any probs?

advice please

Not a stupid question!
Knocking/detonation/pinking is when the fuel/air mixture is heated and/or compressed excessively as it enters the combustion chamber and burns too quickly in an uncontrolled manner (very much like pre-ignition where the mixture ignites before the spark occurs) sending shockwaves through the engine components. A weak fuel mixture can cause it. I've heard it plenty of times on non-turbo'd engines, it's a sort of metallic 'tinkling' sound, unmistakeable once you've heard it. You might not hear it with the stereo too loud! It varies in loudness depending on how bad it is, it's not something you can feel.
Usually occurs more under high load at lower revs (eg. accelarating up hill in a high gear), the easiest way to get rid of it is to retard the ignition timing if possible, or try higher octane fuel. But yeah, it's to be avoided! :nono:
I would gradually load the engine more and more as you drive and listen for it. If it happens, don't repeat it, if not just thrash it harder and enjoy!
