Try applying the handbrake VERY VERY GENTLY AND SLOWLY whilst driving and experience if the noise changes, could be a handbrake shoe breaking up or needing adjustment, this might alos clear the noise as you will be clearing rust off the drum surface and bedding the shoes in.

just tried that ,noise stopped when i applied the handbrake but also its appears the handbrake is only working on the rear right wheel ,not on the noisy left wheel , so maybe handbrake shoes at fault .

Would plan to service the handbrake shoes, also check the drum surface for cracks.

Anothe place that can cause this sort of noise is on the diff itself.

There's some pressed metal dust/dirt shields on all three drive flanges that are supposed to keep crud out of the seals. It's quite common for these to get a lump of rust or other dirt behind them and cause this sort of tinny mettalic noise.

I had exactly the same noise, if I pulled handbrake up a couple of clicks it went away. Also handbrake didn't work on wheel making noise. Being lazy I left it for months before I tried to sort it. When I eventually took the wheel and disc off, I found that the rear-most brake-shoe was not fitted into the actuator so wasn't held in place and was rubbing on inside of disc. Took less than 10 mins to fix but I'd put up with the noise for months because I'm a lazy bastard.

update problem solved .
stripped off the caliper and removed the disc -- the retaining screw came out no problem.

no problem with handbrake shoes all ok lubes the mechanism while i was there and checked adjustment -
the problem was the back plate behind the disc had somehow been pushed against the disc and was rubbing bent it back all ok .

Sorry 2 jump in2 the thread wit another problem but theres knd of a tinny rattle at about 3250 rpm that seems 2 come from the back of the car but it can be hard 2 pin point sum noises like these. Im pretty sure it could be a loose exhaust baffle but wondering If any1 else had any other thoughts

More likely the heat shield above the rear silencer.

You were right, the heat shield is touching the seem of the back box and is bouncing off it when the exhaust vibrates
