Help - Bad Experience with Autoglym / Maguiars on Leather !

Hi all,

Just bought my 1993 318i cab last Saturday... the interior was actually in pretty good nick, and the leather was still quite shiny but with the expected few stresses and cracks here and there. Nothing to worry about though.

THEN - today I used some Maguiar's Leather wipes followed by Autoglym Leather Care Cream on the seats. DISASTER... the original sheen has now gone !! The leather looks duller and less black than before I started. I've followed the instructions to the letter as well. I've been polishing for ages now, and reapplying, but no real improvement. Have I missed something? I thought Maguiar's and Autoglym products were supposed to be the dogs doo-dahs.

Does anyone have the definitive guide on bringing life back to leather? I've read some of these forums about Gliptone - can it be applied over what I've done now? Please help - any suggestions are most welcome. I almost want to cry...

hi

you are mixing two manufacturers products which is never a good idea

they were not designed to work together

also the shine on your leather is not what should be there
leather is naturally matt finish generally .

auto glym is complete shite

gliptone is the best

use their cleaner and then their conditioner.it will look really good

Leather shouldnt be shiny m8, tis probably some shyte sprayed on to make it look newish again..youve used one of the best things around thats for surer..dont worry there..might not look as good but trust me its better for yer leather if youve took the top film of crap off..the leather can breath again...

If you really want the shiny look and know its not doing any harm..get yerself some bees wax... conditions and will leave a shine

Cheers for the words of encouragement lads.

I actually only used the Maguiars leather wipes on the front passenger seat with the Autoglym. Once i saw the effect wasn't right, I just used Autoglym on its own on the remaining seats.

Both results look just as bad as each other. Black leather that now looks off colour, kind of a pale-ish tone in places.

I note that you say leather shouldn't be shiny, but then i didn't think it should look off colour either.

I'll try your suggestions in due course - gotta now go buy the stuff. Anyone else got good ideas for this problem?

as john says use gliptone.

You can get the cleaner and conditioner from ebay for just over a tenner.

firstly, wipe over seats with a warm smooth damp cloth to get rid of all previos shitty products.

use the gliptone cleaner, which lifts the dirt out of all nucks and crannies, wipe it again after leaving the gel to settle for 5mins.

this first phase should clean it back to its original colour.

the second stage is to apply the conditioner in light applications to bring back the smell and suppleness. this 2nd phase can be repeated over and over again.

Ive used it twice on two different interioirs and has relly made a difference.

I've already ordered the gliptone off ebay, so when it turns up I'll give it a go and let you know. On the auction page, the seller talked about having to "stir the gliptone cleaner in with a nailbrush - no scrubbing". Do you really have to use a nailbrush for this? And I take it the verb "stir" means "to rub in gently in circular motion". Or is he talking boll*cks??

If so, do you guys just use a clean cotton cloth to apply the cleaner if you don't use a nailbrush? I'll have to plunder the girlfriend's bathroom cabinet for one of those otherwise - I'm sure she's going to be best pleased...

Once you've got the leather clean you can use Gliptones Scuffmaster to put some of the colour back.

Sound like somes been trying to do that anyway.

The Gliptone conditioner really brings out the smell of the leather. Just keep applying it until the leather won't absorb any more.
