My poor 320 had been layed up for nearly a month so tonight i started her up.... she took ages to fire then smoked like a good un, its got good compression and runs smooth so i am thinking valve stem seals.

Never tried it, but can't see any reason why it can't be done with the head on, using the compressed air through a spark plug hole method.. Should be able to unclip the rockers and slide them sideways out of the way.

Sure you can move rockers out of way of valve but dunno if compressor would fit in like that, you might vae to take shafts out tbh, would need one of these special valve spring compressors that hooks round bottom of spring seat instead of going round head and onto bottom of valve aswell i expect

Obviously you can't use a conventional sprng compressor.
I've done it on other engines with a home made device that was essentially just a lever with one end anchored to a head stud.

yeah ive seen these.Use compressed air in the cylinder you are working on,slide rocker over and use the special tool ,(like a normal spring clamp but has 2 prongs which slip into the valve spring) compress the spring, remove collets pull seal out and refit new one.

is quite common for a car to smoke if its sat for a while....
have you given it a good run to clear out any condensation/water that might be sitting in exhaust etc ?
or is it def oil ?

What i meant is, i dont think he would fit the type buster is talking about with the rocker shafts in, your way sounds good if it wontBrianmoooore wrote:Obviously you can't use a conventional sprng compressor.

yeah its deffiantly oil, i gave it a good run and it cleared quickly.
Started it again tonight and same again but not as bad..... nothing visible while driving it though....
To be honest it was doing it if it was stood for more than 2 days before i took it off the road.

I have 1 of these and used it to change the stem seals in my old VW scirocco using compressed air in the plug hole...... also handy for checking the vavle seats
