Just got off the phone from ordering the clips and rivets etc to fit an M-tech 2 front vallence.
He said some of the clips may come in bags of 10 so I will need to buy the whole bag full, I said "well dont you split the bag as the part No's ive just given you are for single items??"
He's adamant i can only buy a bag full if thats how they come from Germany?

Is this right? Anyone have similar experiance?

And £15 for a bloody drilling stencil? :x

thats why they get arsey about it! even though you only need a couple of clips, they have to order in whole bag for you. if they sell you 2 clips, they're stuck with 8 that they probably wont be able to do anything with, so thats why they make you buy the bag.

however, had you gone to a dealer that already has the clips in stock, you could of purchased as little or as many as you like...

makes sense really when you think about it...

I just bought 10 clips when doing mine, they are 12p each i think!! And i didnt bother with that stencil, just work it out carefully and it will look like a factory fit. It takes time :) .

Oh, remember to properly treat the metal where you drill holes, or it will rust. Leave the paint/protector to set hard before pushing in the plastic 'rivets'

they can probably only order them in bags of a certain quantity themselves and if they don't normally stock it they can't be bothered to create a little cubby hole for them along with their other parts they will try to sell you the whole bag. Sounds like an individual dealership policy probably dictated by a parts manager. If they only sell them in bags - ask for a discount and tell them you know other BMW franchises sell single parts - so why can't they?

Sell the rest on the zone?

I remember me asking my dealers this, 'why cant you split the bag'. They said 'have the whole bag for the price of 5'!!!

Dealers are always very nice here, give me 10% off everytime :D .

Why would they want a bag of nine clips when you want only one, any more than you don't want nine spare?

They are there to make money, at the end of the day it's at their discretion, they can probably absorb the cost of a few clips and although customer service is the priority, sometimes common sense prevails.

If you aren't happy, ask them to do a dealer search for the part number to see if any other dealer has them in stock, if they do, get their phone number and arrange mail order. This will help them and you!

I have all the stencils for the Mtech two kit and no you cant borrow them!

How you manage to get 15%-30% which is what staff get is totally beyond me, I know someone who spends thousands at BMW for parts every week and he doesn't even get that.

30% is usually reserved for huge bodyshop order companies, to retain their business and stop them going to other bmw dealers, so I can't see how that works either, not someone who buys an oil filter and a few clips!

On the clips thing, as everyone said, why would bmw want to have to locate a pack of 9 clips that they wil never sell, they come in minimum pack quantities so thats what you get.

30% is almost cost.

I work for a Dealers Parts Dept

Most reasons are listed above, like

- Dont want them lying around
- When it comes to stock check, its a pain to find them lying around
- Check records, find out when last sold (would it be worth stocking)
- They are more concerned about the newer cars, not much demand for the older models!
- Messes up the stock

Must admit, its annoying, coz when i order clips for myself i have to order the bag quantity!

I've worked in dealerships too. Basically, anything that is subject to special order is deemed to be a non-stockable item. If you want 1 clip and they come in 10's you either have 10 or go without. Same rule applies to everyone. This is why main $tealers don't like having older cars in their workshops. If they get stictched-up with parts, chances are they'll never sell them.
This is why I no longer drive an E30......

Never had this problem at my local dealers, and I'm always buying small clips!

It would make more sense to bag them in the quantities per car, i.e. 7 clips on a car, 7 clips in a bag.

You must be lucky Simon, that's the exception rather than the rule.
It would make sense for manufacturers to sell small parts in vehicle quantities, but you'd still have the same problem.
Even if you sell seven clips as one kit of clips, you still get people whinging because they don't want a whole kit, just one clip.
It's a no win situation for everyone, including the manufacturer and the $tealers.
This is why I no longer drive an E30......

but most items found on cars, are used on several different models at that age of production, so who's to say how many clips would be for what model?! its too confusing, thats why its 10 clips per bag, 10 clips, or no clips

and essbee said, thats fortunate of you to be able to do that...

Well Andrew, you dont know me, you dont know people I know, and you dont know where I have worked in the past, so I agree that it is beyond your knowledge :D

And congratulations on the stencils

Thanks for the offer Pal318is 8) , but the parts are in now and waiting for collection, a mate of mine is going to show me the drillings on his front vallence so I should be able to sort it without the stencil mate cheers

she looks good dan. i think, but im not sure, that the top part of the bumper is not the actual m tech 2 bumper is it? it looks like the standard one, like on my iS. my mates E30 is tech 2 kitted, and his one has a recess where your bumper has the black bump strips (where the indicators are)

i might be wrong, but just a thought! nevertheless, it looks great...
