61311380233 is the older part no. Can be found in the occasional E28 five series, near the bottom of the steering column, IIRC.

I ordered the 61311373974 part from a guy in Germany and he sent me the following: 5 HE 003 79511373975.(Zeitsteuer-Geraet 12V) Looks like it came out of an E23.

Can I assume that it is unusable in an E30?

I've already asked him to take this back and send me the correct one.

a fully loaded E32 has the soft fade delay circuit which stayed on for 10 secs or so.

The E23 circuits show a timer that could be used on an E30, but I don't know if it fits the same socket.

I purchased a light delay switch from a car acces. shop for a couple of pounds works perfect.

Here's an update on this,

I fitted the thing this morning and it works perfectly - 8 second delay.
Apart from the wire swap on the door switch I needed to scotch lock the Tg & Tk wires together as advised by Smithy318i

Here is the clarification I got from the German provider of the part:

The function of 374 and 375 is the same, the difference is in the output power the part can take.
375 is up to 40 Watt ( 4 x 10 watt lamp ), 374 only 20 Watt.
795 is the Hella Identification, Hella has been building only the stronger 40 Watt type for years now.

If anybody wants to source more of these he seems to have more in stock and charges ┚¬15 + ┚¬8.50 postage + 5% for Paypal.

The delay works on the drivers door switch but not on other doors. Is the wiring of my door switches not as it should be?

Interesting info, there!
Drivers door only is how it should be. Very strange of BMW to decide the passenger doesn't need the delay.
I correct this by running a wire from the passengers door switch, (disconnect existing wire) to the wire connected to the driver's door switch.

Possible they were thinking something like that, but it's only about six seconds.

It is not "Soft off", just "off" but I'm happy that it delays 8 seconds.

I'll drop Michael in Germany an email to see if he has a "soft-off" relay with the same pinout as the one I just fitted. He specializes in E23s- here is his website:

I just heard back that a relay with soft-off for the E23 model was never availible,

firstly check the position of the switch on the dome light.
secondly remove and clean the contacts on the door switches.

report back if that doesnt fix the fault.
