It's an air/water pipe. The air pipe goes into the bottom of the TB, and the cam cover breather on the other... might be wrong though.

It actually looks like you've got it upside down and the wrong way round, as if you've got 25 and 17 mixed up. The metal coolant U-bend should sit under the air pipes... in fact, you can miss most of the coolant pipes out.

you may be right giles

but even if you are and i swap them all round im still gonna be left with an open end on at least one of the pipes

will have a bash later at swapping them over etc but i still think im gonna be left with an open pipe

heres a quick q for ya

does the bellows have a blanking plug in it??
should it stay blanked or does something connect to it??

i remember Iain removed a blank from the bellows

all this is confusing because we didnt strip the car i got allready stripped down so we were working blind and having to guess where pipes go by there shape and bends etc

pipes 17 and 25 all i did was replace with new pipes and connect as they were

so maybe they were wrong when the previous owner had the car too

There's definitely a pipe that connects to the underneath of the intake bellows. Take the blank out and connect your spare pipe to that.

The pipe with the arrows on it in the pic is meant to be on the other side and the one with no arrows is meant to be on the left side.

Mine was a right mess, cracked and taped like yours, plus had the metal U skipping part 17, and the bit where 18 connects in was blocked off with a bolt, and had a pipe coming out the other end connected to the top of the throttle body! (the pink ? in the pic) That now has the correct cap on it thanks to Tims ETK skills (cause its not listed for the m42!) and the rest of the pipes back where they should be
Cheers,
Robin
