still having issues with circuit 21,
rev counter, clock, radio all dead but glove box light is still working - cant find any cut wires and the fuse is fine,
shaking the loom about doesnt bring anything back into life either,
strange thing is it kicks into life once or twice a week for about 30 seconds...
think it could be the fuse box ? - (doesnt explain why the glovebox light is still on...)
going to dig out the old immobiliser and alarm this week as its a bit butchery in there and go back to standard at some point
electrical problem

Later E30's don't have the glove box light on fuse 21. It works off an ignition switch controlled supply instead, so first see if it works with the ignition off.
If it doesn't, then you have the whole of the fuse 21 circuit not working. This is a red/green wire that comes through the bulkhead from the fusebox at the back of the glovebox, and then divides to go several places.
Check the fuse by swapping it with a known good fuse, and if still nothing works, put that fuse in another circuit to check that it has not just blown. Look into fuse 21 socket, and check that the outer part of the socket hasn't come adrift and slid back into the fusebox.
If the fuse is blown, then you next problem is to find out why.

cheers for the tips, ill see how it goes - quite annoying not having a rev counter! (and the radio come to think of it.....)

well i stripped the old alarm system out and old immobiliser (circa 1990 i think) - fixed all the wiring by soldering / heatshrink
after all the messing about, the rev counter clock and radio started working again, but it died again at 4am in the morning while it was sat on the drive (because the clock stopped) - i cant explain why its just cutting out like that, going to have to trace the wire from the fusebox now.
other bonus is since removing the old alarm/immobilser - remote central locking is the central locking is working better than before and the car is oddly enough running much better too - might just be me but it seems like a scalded cat now!
right i discovered what the problem is, turns out i have water in the passenger footwell - this caused the solder joints in the loom to "rust" and break - for some reason 4 green/red cables join up to one (rear boot light i assume) just near the passenger seat - explains why it was so intermittent - it mustve been shorted to ground too - the whole electrical system seems "brighter"
might be worth a look there if anyone else gets any odd electrical problems as theres lots of joints - i resoldered quite a few and the cable was in poor condition
