Hi mate,
Recently bought one myself and dead chuffed with it!
I looked for rust areas on wheel arches, foot wells in the boot and around the bootlid! Best to check as much of it as possible really!
As for everything else, just try spend as much time as possible checking as much as you can. Check engine bay for leaks, engine mounts etc etc....
Ask for a test drive and listen out for knocks/strange noises. Check suspension and tracking etc etc.....
There's loads one can check on, but it's best to remember that these motors are all getting on a bit now and there is usually bound to be some thing playing up.
Good luck with the search mate!

Paid £2600 for an F Reg Mtech 2 in decent nick with Full Service History!
Got the fella down from £3000 due to a dent in passenger wing and crap de-badge job!
Also car came with lots of mods already done! No rust on it and runs like a dream.
Personally I would aim for £2500 - £3000 grand for a decent one! Anymore than that and your talking minters/near minters and/or low mileage cars!
Hope you find what your looking for mate!
