Just found this local guy who's a real car enthusiast. Did my clutch for me nice and cheap. Going back in a week or so to get the cracked spring replaced and lowered

Now, the problem with guys like this is that he likes to take cars and make them go stupidly fast. So, I was chatting away about wanting to get a 325 sport at some point and he says. "Nah m8, your cars got the best condition shell I've seen and it way too nice to drive to get rid of. Look, I'll drop a 2.5 litre straight 6 turbo-charged lump in there. No problem. Only cost you about £500."

Eeek! Dammit! Now he's go me thinking!

Help! :D

turbo=reliability

the guys doing this are suffering major problems, cooling in particular

don't get me wrong if there was a reliable conversion out there i would turbo a 2.5 no probs but there isn't and unless u have deep pockets and patience don't do it

2p in the pot

tbh I probably wouldn't go the turbo route. Probably kill myself at some point ;) and the car is used as a daily driver so reliability is a must.

However, I wouldn't mind having a bit of a sleeper. Keep the 316i badge on etc :)

sorry mate, I'm gonna take umbridge at that comment

Turbo = reliabilty, yep no problems at all, provided you carry out a proper conversion, as for running hot, mine sits @ 1/3 temp on a run even in this heat, and in nose to tail will creep just over 1/2 no more

Malc's ran for 2 hours stationary, never exceeded 1/2 way, and thats @ 32 degrees ambient temp.

2.7 with the longer stroke and higher piston speeds has more chance of running hot, due to the higher friction on the internals.

Just my 5p

Fit a engine oil temp guage and you'll see things differently. The water temp on my m5 round the track remained at a constant 1/2. The oil temp started rising quite a bit from normal driving. When it starts getting to a certain point you know to start easing off and allowing the car to cool down.

A 2.5 turbo would have quite a high oil temp if driven hard for a constant few miles. 2.7's run much hotter than 2.5's.

My 10p.

I'd imagine he's just throwing figures around to get me excited. ;) Bloody worked too!

Seriously though, whatever I decide on will have to wait. Got a few bits left to do mechanically (busted spring and extremely perished rear bushes) then it's back to getting the old girl looking pretty again. :)

I spoke to the Sweedish guys who done that 750bhp E30 that was featured in PBMW a while back. I wanted 500bhp or around there and was quoted £8k for the job and that's with the publicity they would have got, so No, a turbo done poperly aint cheap. If you still want it, then better to save the extra dollar and have it done right at the beginning or you will spend a fortune getting fried parts replaced. Just my £1 worth
