Hi guys when the engine is first started on my 320i it seems to idle a bit high at about 1500rpm it then calms down to about 900 rpm. Sometimes it also idles between 1000rpm and 1200rpm after a long drive. Is there a reason for this? I have read loads on here about people cleaning the ICV, however I ahve no idea what this bit looks like.

Can anyone help?

Many thanks
Tom

I'm having the same problem on my 325i, but it has definitely started to happen more recently. It used to idle a little over 1000rpm on a cold morning and then settle down to about 750. Now, it will frequently idle at 1500+ after I come to a halt. If I sit there for a while (sometimes upto a minute) the engine speed will drop again, but I'm convinced this is partly responsible for the nasty drop in fuel consumption I've had recently!

Hi, the ICV is located off the rubber pipe that runs from the airflow meter to the throttle body, it's silver and black and has an arrow on it, and a wiring connector, there's 2 types, an L shape and a T shape.

Uneven idling can also be caused by airleaks in the intake system, fave place to go is under the inlet bellow (between Airflow meter and throttle body). Spray carb cleaner around the intake system, if the idle raises then you've found the leak, as the system takes the carb cleaner in.

I've circled the ICV in the below picture (click to make it bigger)

Ive got a problem with my m40 1.8 It idles to low, it somtimes starts on the button, no problems, even in the cold. Then somtimes, warm,or cold,it starts and the MPG dial goes crazy as the engine tries to stay alive, and it idles at about 500. It normally idles at about 700 which can cause problems. Is there a way to adjust this?

Ive sprayed carb cleaner on the intake, and ICV, but thats it
