Personally I'm not in favour of LPG at all since its still a fossil fuel and doesn't really help with carbon emissions. Biodiesel and bio-ethanol are pretty much carbon neutral (depending on how the energy used in their production is itself produced) and work without modifying standard engines. Thats a green arguement tho, not a price/performance issue.
If I were made king of the world, I'd change the rules so that farmers were incentivised to produce oilseed rape and biodiesel and/or sugarbeet for bio-ethanol and could sell the stuff tax-free (like in the rest of Europe). Then we'd stop growing food we don't need and could cut down on importing fuel from abroad that we could actually grow at home. I know that we wouldn't become self-sufficient in fuel through this, but it would help!

Whilst I understand the arguements about bio fuel and that it is "carbon neutral" in practice Carbon Dioxide shouldn't be the only "green issue" that we look at.Morat wrote:Personally I'm not in favour of LPG at all since its still a fossil fuel and doesn't really help with carbon emissions. When the EU announced that it was going to make biofuel 10% compuslary by 2010, thousands of hectares of delicate rainforest were cutdown in places like indonesia, malaysia and brazil. Basically your replacing one evil with another. There is not enough money in palm oil/sugar caine to grow it in such are large scale in Europe, (land is too expensive) meaning it will always cause problems.
I agree though LPG is only a stop gap.
More money needs to be spent on electric cars and microgeneration of electricity at home (solar / wind) to charge them up. but this is a little way off, though if the right companies get involved not that far.

At least. Depends on the mix, but is usually more, especially in the UK.Gwynleym10 wrote:[

LPG production is a bye product of petrol and diesel production. If you produce petrol and diesel, then you get LPG as well - far more than can be used.Morat wrote:Personally I'm not in favour of LPG at all since its still a fossil fuel and doesn't really help with carbon emissions.

Until recent times much of this excess was flared off at the refineries, and still is in much of the world, so it's all going to end up as CO2, whatever.
By using LPG to power road vehicles you are not increasing the total amount of CO2 produced, and therefore LPG powered vehicles are effectively carbon neutral, as well as having virtually almost no other emissions other than water vapour.

I agree that it has to be produced sensibly and part of that is locally. There's absolutely no point in buying rapeseed oil (or whatever feedstock you're dealing with) on the other side of the world and shipping it 8000miles before its used. The EU really didn't think before introducing that regulation. I'm sure that the brazilians would want to defend their right to free trade and would argue that any attempt to restrict imports is protectionism - but they could have got round it by increasing duty on rapeoil produced from rainforest or other "environmentally sensitive" areas.Gwynleym10 wrote:Whilst I understand the arguements about bio fuel and that it is "carbon neutral" in practice Carbon Dioxide shouldn't be the only "green issue" that we look at.Morat wrote:Personally I'm not in favour of LPG at all since its still a fossil fuel and doesn't really help with carbon emissions. Well thats one way of looking at it, the other is that you're still buying a fossil fuel. LPG has many other uses apart from in cars and maybe we should be promoting its use over natural gas instead of paying the russians to build pipelines all the way across europe to supply their natural gas to the whole of the EU....Brianmoooore wrote:LPG production is a bye product of petrol and diesel production. Anyway, LPG is a better choice than petrol right now - especially since bioethanol needs alterations to petrol engines - but in the long term I'd much rather see LPG treated like other fossil fuels as far as tax is concerned. One day... and I'm sure it'll be long after the last E30 is weighed in

Yes, it has a lower calorific value. Approximately 20% less for UK LPG.m-dtech wrote:

So you just feed in 20% more of the stuff. Not a problem.

My series 3 land rover ran on chip fat for a couple of years. Now being used as a research vehicle at my university so that students can practice getting the right mix of biodiesel in it - it'll run on anything!
Weird thing is that 30 year old vehicle will probably outlast just about every car on the road today as new diesels are too picky about what they run on, and LPG and petrol will be gone in 20 years. Whereas the landy will just trundle along on whatever she's filled up with....
fucking slow though... wouldn't want to be using it to escape a city in a nuclear blast when we're having wars over diminishing oil reserves - I'll keep an Evo locked in a garage with a full tank of priceless petrol ready for a quick getaway...

thay use the VW/Audi lump... a very serious tool!
my little bro drives 110 miles a day in his mk3 polo and i keep telling him he should fit a late VW diesel as it's be quick as hell and sooooo economical in a 700kg car! also a mod that not many dubheads have done which is hard to find!
