Just been on the phone to my dad and he's now going for a carbon fibre airbox.
Just wondered what the advantage of it was over the normal airboxs were.

Also how does this work?

The CF Airbox (that you can get from S14) is a replica of the system used on the original DTM cars. Fundamentally it gives a better flow of air (and thus greater amount) into the engine, which obviously allows more fuel for a bigger bang. It also allows the removal of the AFM for an aftermarket system with all the benefits that provides.

The sound is an acquired taste tbh, not sure Im a big fan judging from the videos Ive seen. But maybe as and when I hear one in the flesh at reasonable speeds I'll form an opinion.

As for the "socks" in your pic, that doesnt work as well as the CF box as the engine eats the warm air from the bay rather than the fresh cold air that the CF box helps deliver.

I also saw an advert in PBMW lastnight for CF Airbox for the E46 M3 and it claims to deliver a proven 20bhp extra, although for a £850 box you'd expect that

I think people underestimate how important getting cold air into your engine is. I know my Msport was loosing a lot of power (40bhp we were told) cause of the small air box and throttle bodies :banghead:

Booty that is just for the airbox don't for get the E46 will need alpha N
another 800 then fitting and mapping.

Thanks for that answer rich. Sorta knew most of that. so it delivers cold air even on a hot day is it something to do with density in the airbox or something like that?

Wouldn't buy no horse of a gypsy would collapse after about hundred yards off pulling the car. Thought they only dealt with dogs and caravans anyway

CF air boxes won't reduce air temp below ambient, but designed properly they'll pick up air at ambient temp, and help to prevent it heating up on it's way to the engine as CF is quite a good insulator :)

socks are bad for power over sausage style filters anyways..

volume of the airbox affects torque n midrange

Apparently one horse power is apparently 33000lbft/minute which means a mythical horse can shift a 33000lb weight, one foot in one minute.

The same horse can move a 3300lb weight ten feet in one minute.

In each case, the work done is the same as work done is force multiplied by distance (from GCSE science :) )

As we measure the torque of and engine against a brake, we get the expression Brake Horse Power, or BHP :)
