That's what I did. Thought it would be a pig of a job, but it took less than an afternoon from start to finish, using bits of old E36 and E30 downpipes.

worked it out after i popped out  obvious when you think about it..

cant find anywhere that does M12x1.5 tho :(

The baffle attached to the engine (ie sits in there still when you remove the sump) does that need to come out to clear?

right did a quick search - i assume the one in the sump is removed (wasnt there in the 1st place in mine) and the other one left..

its quite exciting seeing the insides of an S50 (except if you Bigpimping i guess) - looks like it might have oil squirters for the bottoms of the pistons like the s14 evo lumps maybe.. (tho could be totally wrong with that  )

The baffle attached to the S50 engine does need to come out. The M50 sump wont fit with it in place.

I nearly had a shock when I saw the word 'drill' - I forgot what you were needing to do. I fed my oil return into the dipstick tube, so I didnt need to drill the sump.

I havent got the baffle on my S50, and Im sure Ian hasnt either. It definitely wouldnt fit on mine.

I also had to read it again after seeing 'drill' . Mine is also tee'd (or more accurately - Y'd) into the dipstick tube.

No baffle in mine, and I don't recall having to remove one either (engine or sump).

Ian.

I just drilled a hole in the base of the dipstick tube (above sump level) and had a small pipe spigot welded on the side of it. BMW did it like this on some models.

My M50 sump didnt have one, but my engine did. I just checked the ETK and the 3.0ltr had the baffle but the 3.2 Evo didnt.

For the oil return, I did the same as Ian. I actually used the metal (I think Brass) pipe that uncsrewd from the S50 sump and brazed it on to the dipstick tube so its in a 'Y' shape.

I drilled and tapped mine and re used the s50 fitting in the m50 sump.
The baffle is inside the m50 sump and needs removing before it'll fit. Also the braket on number 5 main bearing cap needs removing, and then re torquing.

Heres a pic of the pipe in the m50 sump after i drilled and tapped it :

from underside :

the baffle which needs removing :

This info is in my s50 thread.
Let me know if you need a tap and i'll send you one.

ive done mine next across from yours away from the level sensor.. Might be a little long but i'll shorten it.

i'll have another look for a tap tomorrow (gotta return the drill bit anyways) but if not that'd be dead handy!! Wanna get a sump back on asap really

Oh crap, Ian has just pointed me here, looks like I need to do the Y thing in the dipstick then cause my motors running and I aint pullin that sump off again to drill a hole!

I removed both mounting brackets for the pickup held on by the main bearing bolts. Think they were on number 3 and 5 from the flywheel end.

No baffle on my engine or M50 sump, definately not when I see buster's pic.
I initially thought my crank might have been hitting this and causing the racket I heard but alas twas more serious

this bit fouls on the sump (you can see the scratching)

do you reckon you could cut it in order to keep most of the baffle (reckon its there for a reason) or would that cause issues with oil supply?

Image

Also.. Oil spray bar you reckon?

Image

If i took the engine no. to a stealer, do you reckon they'd be able to tell me more about the car it came from? had issue trying to buy a throttle cable before as there are loads of different ones.. where would the engine no. be? only no. ive seen so far is 22C93

I asked the same question, Ian332i replied.

"It's on the left side of the block just above the sump gasket. Have a look behind the left engine mounting arm, down under the starter motor. There should be a machined flat section of the block with the number stamped on it."
