Dan

Sorry if i'm wrong but did'nt you mention at the Guildford meet that your engine was'nt running too good? (No offence intended)

If so, will you honestly get the best result's from a project in progress?
Please do not get me wrong as we are speaking through a computer and can come accross wrong, just want Hoshy's work and progress to pull off well.

If i am wrong you can kick me in the ball's :crutch:
Just you did'nt seem too happy at the meet :?

Hey Jon,

Very good point in general terms - never try and mod an engine that's not working as it should.

In this case however the trial run is just to prove the concept that my conversion electronics are capable of running an engine - in its initial state the performance gains would be minimal and the goal isn't to try and improve the engine (any more than the inherent benefits of a MAF) and we wouldn't, because I don't want to be responsible, be ragging the engine

But still, a very fair point.

VEry nice find. I didn't know anybody was selling this kind of thing - it's basically what I'm making. Even before I'd read the site I was planning to have a computer lnk and write software for modifying the table based on RPM. Bastards beat me to it

Depending on cost this would make a pretty good maf conversion for people who want something sooner than the next ice age when mine will be ready - but mine will be mostlikely cheaper and have a couple of extra features.

For anybody who's interested - I spent all of yesterday working on mine. Resolved the discrepancy on the input/output voltage to within 0.02v which I'm hoping will be close enough.

I need somebody to let me put a scope on their car and take a few readings.

Dan what you up to today mate ? Or anybody else fancy a trip to Kingston :)

The pricing on that is quite high when you look at their dealer sites (correct me if I'm wrong):

Ah couldn't see the prices on their site so that's £424 & £493 respectively. I see new E46 MAFs on eBay for around £100 leaving about £350 for the conversion.

That's too pricy by far! The electronics are simple enough to make this a cheap conversion!

MS is awesome no denying, for the money you'd spend on that MAF conversion you'd do far better with MS too.

But, it seems I've found the gap in the market :)

There are more ways of doing it though than just MS or splitsec though. there's a guy in the states who has successfully completed a design pretty similar to what you're trying hoshy on a 318is, there's also things such as old school apexis (bloody cheap - i was gonna use one of these years ago) and even SMTs (more expensive but way better), the latest model apparently can automatically learn a new metering device if connected at the same time as the old one too with no tuning/mapping required.

not got many links really. there's some DIY guides to installing and setting up the SMTs on the web, I don't know where though. the SMT is made by perfect power, website = perfectpower.com. I know about them mainly because C&R enterprises used to swear by them over unichips when I had veedub, so have seen them from time to time. they're a cool piggyback because unlike things like the unichip you can hook up to them from a laptop with free software and tune away. they control fuel and spark too. i know gunni runs one on his m42 too.
the old apexi thing is just the one with the dials at specific RPMs on the front, if setup correctly it does exactly the same as the split second.
for the m42 setup, the guy has a converter box ready for selling, but is still working on a complete product supplied with a MAF, converter box and wiring. when he does, i'll post up the details.

hoshy, my motor is now 2.1 and megasquirted (waiting for some ant mapping  ), ITBs, cams and headwork are coming soon.
