Hey People!!
I've just bought myself some rim but im reluctant to put them on as my security is minimal - I do believe that if someone really wants your car then its gone - However in hope those chav's basta*ds never peep my car - Is the alarm above a waste of time or will it act as a deterant? - Besides double locking nuts - i need something to make a noise, a flashing led and ideally an immobiliser!
Let me know the pro and cons!
regards all
Jason

Very true with whatever alarm system you have fitted, could be £25 could be £400, if they really want it they willJay07 wrote:I do believe that if someone really wants your car then its gone
I fitted a cheap alarm from the bay along with some Clifford stickers and matching LED nearly two years ago and I've still got my car. If they spot you in your car they will get put off trying to nick it if when you get out and blip your fob, lights siren etc sound to say armed they wont know what system you have fitted and will hopefully just leave it alone
I've heard people having issues with expensive proffesionally installed systems, I (touch wood) have never had any problems with mine, and I can start my car from indoors

This one looks identical to the one I bought, if you contact the seller and ask "who makes this alam" and they reply "Giordon" then it is the same alarm. The only downside with it was that the indicators would flash for too long so I disconnected them. I'm sure that it would be possible to alter with an additional relay. I didn't get charged any import taxes either.
It is really good fun coming out of work and blipping your car for it to start up, even more fun when someone's getting into the car next to it.. makes them jump
I'm sure you'll get people respond on this thread saying "you shouldn't bother with that cheap crap, get yourself a Toad Ai606 or something" at the end of the day it's up to you. I bought cheap, it works and has been reliable.
I just found this on the bay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TOAD-AI606-ALARM- ... dZViewItem and you get a certificate for insurance purposes. I've asked them before about the certificate and the response I had was something along the lines of "we assume that if you are fitting it, you are capable of following diagrams/instructions so it will meet the cat 1 requirements"
Anyway waffle over
Charlie

to be honest, i wouldnt use anything but a Clifford, or even a Toad. i've had Cliffords on most of my cars, all installed by the same bloke (friend of mine) and i've never had any problems with them
Jay, the alarm looks like a cheap and nasty alarm. and what you've got to remember is, if they sell it to you like that, it comes with fitting instructions, which means someone else has seen those instructions, you catch my drift?! seems like a being a bit unrealistic here, but ya never know!!
if you want, i could put you on to a top bloke, the guy i use. he's fully qualified, reliable and a sound fella. he fitted an alarm on Cliffybabes convertible about 2-3 months ago if you want another opinion? if you want his number, give me a PM
hope this helps...

All these immobilisers are laughably easy to bypass. Matter of seconds.
The effective way to immobilize an E30 is to short circuit the wire to the fuel pump. Any attempt to start the car then will result in no 11 fuse blowing.
Can still be bypassed if you realise what's happened, but you'll have to remove the rear seat, undo the plate and hot wire on to the pump with a long length of wire.

As long as it has NC relay contacts to open the ignition feed and NO contacts to short the pump wire.Jhonno wrote:[

(as well as something noisey) _ An option was also discussed where the engine turned over but no ignition do you rememeber?...

Hey Stuart thanks for that mate! I take it i'm supplying the alarm - the prob is that i dont have 100 + cash for that kinda set up though it would be ideal! Do you have any idea what he charges? I might have to wait for that 1 need something short term. i know what your saying about cheap alarms... I dont really believe any of them work for a decent crim!if you want, i could put you on to a top bloke, the guy i use. he's fully qualified, reliable and a sound fella.

This is the thing! They cover this topic on tv, in maxpower etc - how quick alarms are by-passed (what to do!!) 5 secs, 10 sec, maybe i should just get the biggest steering lock on the market!!All these immobilisers are laughably easy to bypass. Matter of seconds.

Sounds like it may be being triggered into a silent alarm mode.charlE30 wrote: They flash for about 15 seconds but it feels like foreverI haven't had any problems with the alarm going off by itself
The OE alarm on one of my cars does this if you arm it too quickly after closing the door.

Sorry to jump on thread of original topic but is there an alarm that you would conceed that is maybe allright?!!!
i always rig a fuel cut of switch in the cars i own so it'll have to be towed if it was stolen unless they find my little switch!! but its a bit McGuiver and would prefer a decent alarm that doesn;t cost the earth (read 400 pounds)
i like the look of that toad jobby but are they that easy to bypass?
i know the standard bmw immobilisier is a joke alltogether as all it takes is a wire....

Does this one include the "microwave" sensors so that you can leave the roof off and any object within the space inside the doors (does that make any sense?) triggers the alarm?cliffybabe wrote:I got a toad ai606 on my cab and its wicked mate, stu's mate done mine for me and Im really please i went for the toad, it does the windows and everything
How much did it cost to have it fitted?

It cost me £350 including window closing module, i have since up graded tot he micro (bubble sensor) and glass breaker from ebay as these are plug and play itmes for anthoer 50quid i was laughing, However the unltra sonics placed at the bottom of the windscreen worked really well in fact i might go back to them as u can leave the roof down it will only go off with a gust of wind.Zayyan wrote: Does this one include the "microwave" sensors so that you can leave the roof off and any object within the space inside the doors (does that make any sense?) triggers the alarm?

daz, the problems with all that will almost certainly be linked to the dodgy wiring for the retro fit leccy windows, disturbed when you had to mess about with the console and refit the carpet. They would pack up on me every now & again, removal of the ashtray and a wiggle of the wires got 'em working again, never had a problem with the central locking though
But given betty is on borrowed time now, it's probably not worth the messing.
top alarm the toad 606 though

leccy windows now work by touching wires from windows direct to a live n earth as im too stupid to know how to rewire them
alarms coming off and going on the sport as well as its current unknown alarm

So what makes a good alarm? Toad, Frog, Cat?? What really keeps the car safe - All these alarms are available to all! What makes them worth the money? Why so good?

Doesn't matter how many whistles and bells an alarm has. It's what it does to actually immobilise the car that matters. Most are easily bypassed in seconds.Jay07 wrote:So what makes a good alarm? The hidden switch is a good idea, but two hidden switches are better, and they should short circuit the fuel pump line, not disconnect it.
Another one that works on simple ignition systems like all E30s except the iS, is to switch a capacitor across the ignition coil. Get the value right, and the car will almost start, but not quite.

Cheers O'B'1 - but in all honesty i dont know enough about the ignition wiring to start cutting in to it! Its frustrating coz your suggestion seems the best over all but how to is my prob mate? Guess i'll start looking into all the bits you mentioned and go from there..... Its 1 of those times when it would help to have a step by step, what is required etc!
(wishful thinking - i know, i've asked before) - Anyway, i think i can get my head round it, eventually! Thanks.

Fuel pump wire is a green/purple which comes into the cabin ar the back of the glovebox, goes back the LH inner cill onto the back seat pan, across the back edge of the seat pan to a plug and socket strapped to the metal pipe that crosses the RH side of the seat pan.
From here it goes out through a grommet just behind the fuel tank, and then between the tank and body to the pump.
A switch shorting this line near the glovebox, and another near the rear seat, preferably connected right at the pump, and your car isn't going anywhere under it's own power, unless the potential thief really knows what he's doing and has the time to do it.
Any attempt to start the engine, either with the key or by bypassing the immobiliser will result in a blown fuse 11.
