Hi sorry for the newbie style question 8) I've got a 1989 318i 2door with the m40 engine - which isn't the quickest engine in the world. Only thing is, I would be happy with just a bit more power. I've put an induction kit on it with heat shield and and a cold air feed which has made a very small difference, but was thinking of getting a Zone chip as they are quite cheap...anyway here's my question :)

-does any one know how much difference one of these chips will make on my m40 motor (bhp difference?)

-will it be easy to fit for a novice? (I found the ecu bit just beneath the steering column, says Bosch Motronic on it.

Many thanks!

I have one you can buy from me mate, was in my car before i changed the engine.
Does'nt really give much of a bhp gain but the throttle response is more effective, just accellerate's better but not a massive difference.
As everyone will no doubt tell you, you don't get performance from an M40 engine, they're already tuned to their highest ability and you will spend alot of money finding that it won't go any faster.

Change the hydrolic lifter's, use decent oil (flush through a few time's) and stick some injector cleaner in ie; Nitrious cleaning fluid (Autocare, most car shop's). I also found after using Shell Optimax for a while that this made a difference aswell 8)

Other than that, when you come to your sense's and realise (As i did), change the engine :D

cheers for the advice Jonbuoy :) it's a shame there isn't much tuning potential of these engines but never mind. The car runs well for it's engine capacity and it revs well up to 6000.

am definitely interested in your chip if you've got 1. Is it easy enough to fit? i.e. can I just slot the new chip right in to where the old one was and off i go...?

btw. please could you PM me what kind of price you are looking for for the zone chip?

cheers

It's not a Zone chip, no mate.
Did'nt get one from you in the end as i had the 2.5 in mind at the time and had already bought the chip from Jason :?

My ECU had been re-mapped aswell with this chip and the engine performed fantastically :D
You will probably be better off buying a chip from Ant mate, it's just i've got no use for the chip :?
