Gentlemen,I am removeing M20 engine/manual box as a lump.Do I need to remove gearstick?I have disconnected at the bottom of stick(where short shift will go on the way back)but the bit under the tunnel where the steady bracket enters a rubber bush? Will this pull out as I pull the unit forward before lowering the back of the box? Many thanks

There is a 8mm or 10mm (I cant remember which) nut that holds the bracket (with the rubber bush in) to the car. Best bet is to undo that and the gearstick will swing down out of the hole in the tunnel.

You can then take the engine and box out in one go with the gear linkage still attached - just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesnt catch on anything.

Im assuming youre taking the engine and box out through the top.

dont forget to take the reverse light wires off the right hand side!!

You can take the 'tunnel clip' out, although it is tricky if you haven't seen one before. The clip pulls up and is attached to a locking pin, which then pulls out to the left.

Part number 3

I unclip that up by the gearlever and leave the wire running along the shifting arm and attached to the gearbox.

May as well leave that one in - its not the easiest thing to unclip at all with the gearbox in the car.

You sure can - Ok its an M40 but engine, box and front prop section out in one go.....

The M20 is more of a tight fit, and if the car is level you may have clearance issues with the PAS pump. Best thing to do is raise the rear of the car above the front, so you have more of an angle to play with. Engine and box will slide in and out without problems then.

Exhaust and heatshield need to come off or at least drop enough so you can reach.

You can work around the prop and get to the nut.

Jacking the back up above the front does make this a lot easier!!
