I was talking to a guy on another forum who is getting a 118i which he says has a 2 litre putting out 129 bhp.
The bhp figure doesnt sound much. My 325i puts out 165bhp which is only 500cc larger
oh and the 118i is a sport

I had the use of an E46 316ti compact a year or so back, it was gutless as hell, 0-60 is 10 secs!!! would do it's stated Vmax of 125 though.
This has a 1.8 16V affair under the bonnet and only produced 112bhp!
That's shocking for a modern 16V 1800cc engine
Sure the E30 320i is somewhere in the 120-130bhp region, someone will pull out their owners manual and answer in a bit i reckon

That doesnt sound much of an improvement over 10 years ie. exactly the same bhp figure. I would have thought even a 1 series would be heavier than an E30 with all the extra safety features and crumple zones. Does'nt bode well for any 118i owners.

considering our very own E30 318iS pumped out 136 bhp in 1989, it's not very good, plus thats a 1800cc 16 valve
U know why Bmw's 4 pot engines have all been sh!t since the M42?
to be fair the original M42's power figures and economy are better than alot of todays engines of the same spec

I wonder if they are limiting the bhp figure

The 2-litre 6 pots are ok though. M50 in the E35 was 150bhp, and the whatever in the E46 is about 160bhp i think. Just the 4-pots are lacking.
But if you want a shit-hot 4-pot, you get a 318is or a Honda!

but i'd have a 318iS over a wanky underpowered thirsty 6 pot 2 litre, whether it be a E30 320, E36 or E46.
buy a 6 pot with some bollocks
drive a e34 520 auto and u will know what i mean!

Of course they are.
The 118i uses the same 2-litre 4-pot as the 120i but is restricted.
118i - 129bhp
120i - 150bhp
