Just had a very good day, making my old sport totally standard.

I removed my inverted billys from it and 35mm h&R springs plus Hartge roll bars

i've fitted the shocks and springs onto my auto

Also last week got my G/friends golf going after a thermostat/head gasket failure, so was nice to lay the alpina up for a well earned rest after a stint of daily use, because she was driving the auto. So it's been good to have the £300 shed back

I removed my inverted billys from it and 35mm h&R springs plus Hartge roll bars

I also changed the fluid on the auto box, now i've gone for a spin and the auto box light is on and in D in Economy mode and it won't change gear. The auto box light is on too :? It will go into reverse but with a little clunk.

So do i find a second hand auto box OR convert to manual, or have i done something!

depends on how much traffic you drive in! Do you really want it to be a manual?

Its probably easier to fine a decent reliable manual box than an auto one...

Taking the box out is going to be the difficult bit, so its not going to be much more work to convert it.

I have a manual central consul if you need it....

i don't or can't afford to break it as i need it! keeps me pina off the road.

Finding good auto boxes is hard work though isn't it?
Thats why i changed the fluid to prolong it's life! :?

i'd start by not repeating yourslef several times! maybe you listened to too much tracy chapman, and thought it sounds good to repeat and repeat and repeat?! ...its not!!! winkeye

but when you top an auto box up, you're supposed to drain it when the box is cold (undriven temp), then refill it at the same temp, start the engine, select all gears a few times and let the 'box drive the wheels when the car is on 'stands, (the engine only needs to be a couple of mins at the most) then turn engine off and top up again to maximum level

the fluid has to get right into the epicyclic gears and all the actuators and pumps, lines, etc...

then it should be alright?

unless, your missus has f*cked it up, and doesnt wanna tell you something?!

Simon,

I believe Ste has an auto box for sale. It came out of the silver Touring he broke recently. As far as I'm aware the box is fine. He drove the car back from the Lakes without any probs.

Cheers,

Ian.

Hi

Try as advised the top up the oil, it can also be the electronics that cause problems on these, normally wont change gear when cold..

I have a switchable auto box complete with converter and pipes etc for £70

Have 2 boxes one out of sport and another out of standard 325 but will keep one for a spare

Cheers

i did it on axle stands! the light came on before changed it, so i thought i'll change the fluid and it might go out, but no. So it could coincidence maybe

sounds like it could be an electrical fault or duff solenoid speaking to the experts today!

Ian can u PM me Ste's number please as i need the car on the road asap and replacing the box might be the easiest solution.

I can pick it up this week sometime providing a gearbox will fit in my alpina's boot  Or are they too heavy?!

I've relegated it to the road not nice enough to stay in the garage!

FIXED!

yay new filter and oil too, nice smooooooth gear changes.

Turned out to be nothing wrong with the box, so the auto box i got this week was for nothing, but i will keep it as a spare.

There is a back up ecu to the main ecu for the auto box. This is to stop the box going into first gear @100mph if the main one fails for example. So the back up one had given up the ghost, so the main ecu went into get home mode which locks it into 2nd gear.

I've just got back from birds too! Big up Phil Crouch hero sorted me right out!
