Since buying my 318is it has had a REALLY annoying tiny little squeak that comes from the dash. It seems the whole dash is oscillating when doing speeds above 50. The centre portion that has the heater controls and stereo goes up and down by about 5 —a 10mm making a little squeak that sounds like metal on metal or plastic on metal. These days it's made ten time worse by my refusal to go and get my wheels balanced (I need new wheels and tyres for my project so trying not to spend on the car as it is).

I get the feeling the dash isn't secured properly..

Has anyone else had this and dealt with it? I have a tiny crack in the top of the dash so I â€Ëaspose I could change it but really I just HAVE to stop the squeak before I loose the will to live and drive into something large and concrete.

Cheers for any help!

Jai

There's just a single bolt attaching the dash to the centre console on the left hand side. Check that.

If it's jumping up and down by 5-10mm and all your worried about is the squeaking noise then i'd say you have bigger worries than that.
The main one being your a tight git

It costs about three quid to have a wheel balanced.

Tight as arseholes!

Was gonna go get them done on sat. Could be the lack of exhaust hangers (few quid too) making it beam or the terrible, terrible wheel bearing.

Thing is the wheels and suspension are coming off soon making me even tighter!

Perhaps 5 - 10 mm is a bit too much too, 1-2 perhaps.

There are two screws that hold in the panel with the heater controls. They are located underneath this panel and they screw in up the way (if you follow me). Sounds to me like they are missing due to some lazy previous owner having the dash to bits and got fed up trying to get the screws back in (cos they are a bit of a fiddle to get back in). You'll also need a stubby phillips driver ............ and a lot of patience.

i have had an annoying squeak from the same area and it turned out to be the lower edge of the dash( just below the heater controls) moving against the upper edge of the centre consol...try pushing the two bits apart and see if it stops...i cured it by putting apiece of shiny plastic between
