What would be better, do you think - a new motor or having the pistons etc re-done? Here in SA, its cheaper to buy a new motor than it is to have an old one fixed, but then, will the new one and the other old bits in the car work well together?

Replace the whole lot and either slavage the decent bits of the knackered unit for spares or sell off as many useful parts as possible to recoup some of the cash.
Will probably take longer to rebuild the knackered engine than drop a new one in so it will save you some time as well.
.....or stick an s50 in it
