Does anyone know if there is a "generic" fan one can replace the aux fan with, as they are rather expensive! Also, if alternative fans are available, can one just mod a standard electric fan to fit; and will it work with the two speed temperature switch, ie: run at two different speeds?

I don't know of anyone who makes a non genuine 'copy' of the standard Aux fan, so whatever you use is going to require some new bracket's or mountings. Possibly a little more tricky if you have aircon (probably do in Durban
)
You should be able to use any fan that will physically fit (standard is 14 inches across). To retain the two speed operation, you will need to fit the fan resistor to the new fan, but apart from that it should all work the same.
Cheers,
Ian.
P.S. My brother lives a couple of hours north of you up in Estcourt

One thing I wanted to ask- my car has all the aircon pipes and cables, will the aux fan still work as normal if the compressor is not connected? When I bought the car it never had the compressor in. I know the aux fan is not working, and the car has been running without a thermostat and non working aux fan ever since I've had it (just over a year now). My main concern is that I do drive in a lot of traffic, and I need to make sure that the motor is not going to overheat, hence the reason why I want to get the aux fan working as quickly as possible!

Here's a copy of the fan wiring diagram that should help you check the wiring is okay.

Check to see if the fan will physically spin. It's quite common for them to jam and cause both the fan fuses (Fuse 3 & 18) to blow.

Ian.

Thanks for the help mate - I will take a look later this week. I know the fan has definitely jammed as I can barely turn it by hand! So it's a new fan and resistor and possibly thermo switch to get her nice and cool again! Luckily it's winter here - so it's not too hot at the mo!
