So which is better? Can't decide which one to lust futilely after for the next couple of years.
M6 is 0.3seconds slower to 0-60 than the E28 (and the E34?), but I think it looks so much nicer and has so much cool stuff inside - a fridge?! And dual aircon for front and rear.
But M5 - does it handle better?
Tempted by the M6 to be honest, but I reckon most zoners would go for the M5.
Any thoughts - bit of idle chitchat? Included E34 M5 cos I thought it would be a popular one, bit of an unfair advantage though cos it's newer.
Didn't include M3 cos it'd obviously win on this site

Sorry the other one didn't have all the options so reposted it.
The M6 no doubt. Others are maybe better cars but neither happen to be one of the greatest looking cars of all time. The big sharky coupe is though, and for that alone (despite its performance and handling) it wins this contest for me.

I've got a thing for E34's so it's got to be an M5 for me, E24/8 M cars are top motors but a little to dated for me

e34 m5 3.8
the engine is one of the best bmw has ever made. the car has aluminium body panels, get a later one with the nurburgring package and it will eat the m6 and e28 for breakfast
trouble is i imagine most m6s are sludgeboxes too

Anyway, E34 M5 for me I think. Refined and extremely capable. £3k for a 3.6 sounds very tempting!

SUPER COUPE M635CSI, the best way to cruise the continent in the 80's when you were single, then when you get married the e28 M5, its kinda "sensible" looking and space fpr the shopping, once you are a little older and have a kids the e34 m5 is the choice transportration.

Hmm-interesting poll!
I'd have to say e34 m5, I honestly cant see past them. they cost peanuts to buy (relatively for a 150+mph car), big, comfortable, practical and cheap to run (compared to the gas guzzling monster that my 735i was!)
Best bit is they look like a 520i to the uninitiated chav
I'd have that 3.6 off ya in a flash, if I wasnt £3000.01 short

I don't know, I've just been kind of seduced by the M6. And isn't it's 0-60 speed actually faster than the E34? I'm guessing the handling won't be anything like as good though, as it's all based on a 70s design and it's bigger. And fuel economy - some people have said 15mpg, other's 28mpg. I'm guessing the E34's a bit better than that
I saw an M6 on Ebay the other day - de-chromed, full Mtec kit, sideskirts and everything, black with tinted windows, and brand new 17" alloys off a modern 5 series. Looked amazing! Not out of date either - was actually advertised as perfect for drive by shootings - for the "discerning mafia boss". Went for £6000 though
It's crazy though - 280bhp, separate air con for front and rear, electric windows, seats, sunroof, obc, leather heated seats, fridge, everything you could imagine - and it sells for less than a new fiesta! I suppose I shouldn't complain - at that price I should be able to buy one in a year or so. (maintaining it and running it might be a different story tho...)

I voted for the e34 as it's one of the greatest all round cars ever built, I'd have to have a touring version though.
Despite voting for the e34 I'd rather have an e28 as they're rarer and cooler.

How can the M6 not be winning! Just look at that photo Conan's posted before you vote? It's like a sexy big black dollop of... I don't know what but it's beautiful. Someone post a picture of a nicer M5
The thing to do is drive them both I think, sure the big six looks sexy but if you drive them I expect you will go for the E34 M5. Depends what you want it for really....

Mark.
Sure the M5 drives better, but not by the amount needed to compensate for its lack of beauty. The 6ix drives very well (Ive driven one) and looks like automotive porn.............................

You'll need to pay twice as much for an M6 than you can buy a nice e34 M5 for. The M5 won't come with see through front wings either.
The 6 is a way cooler and infinitely better looking car. Driving one you wouldn't see which way an e34 m5 went though.
e34s can look the bollocks too. My last M5:

E34 M5 such a lovely design. They do everything well and are the best of everything.
They have grown old very well and don't really rust at all. Unlike E24's and E28's which do the good old rust from the inside out first trick

My opinion is going to be biased as I have an E34 M5 3.8 with the Nurburgring suspension package.
These beasts sound absolutely amazing and the handling for such a heavy car is something that really surprised me coupled with what is a very good ride.
Even by today's standards they are an extremely quick machine. Even E46 m3's won't lose one.
I think it's the second most powerful 6Cyl engine BMW ever made with 347bhp only beaten by the nutter CSL with it's carbon airbox and alphaN setup.
Compared to the E28 it's miles ahead. The M6 though is a real looker and I would have one any day as long as the inner wings had been sorted.
However, while the E34 m5 might be a great car it has one thing that all owners complain about (nothing is perfect!)......that steering Box. It's a small price to pay.
It is a great all round car. A nice quiet civilised cruiser when you want it to be and a high revving balls out race car noise making beast.
I need to save up for some Schrick cams to make it even better!

Been looking at some of the 6 series on Ebay. As always, there's a huge price hike for the M versions (£400 for a 635csi to £7000 for an M6). Does anyone know how the regular 635Csi with 220bhp performs?
Is it actually a bigger car than the E28 - cos the modern 6 series are actually smaller than the modern 5 series?

The regular ones are quick enough.
However, I don't think that's what they are about.

out of the three i like the E24 M635 and the E28 M5 the best. E28 may have dated looks but I like them. They have that classic look whuich you'll never get again, like the E24 big 6. They have shark style front end which looks menacing! E34 nice car an that has more tamer looks.

Andrew,
I personally think the later 3.8's with the 18's look spot on. But then everyone's opinion differs.
A 3.6 whoops a 535i. A 535i may stick to a 3.6 upto say 50mph but after that it's good bye!
540i 6 speed is a weapon.
3.8's, driven properly are monsters. Especially ones which are 6 speed and have a 3.73 diff instead of a 3.23.....like mine.
6 series as you described usually causes most people to make a mess. One day i will have a non rusty one if there is such a thing.

Quite fancy a 540i... supposedly easy to get more horses out of em (the missing ones that'd have scared the m5 otherwise!)... Manual must be rare though, & I guess they'd have to be on an alusil lump by now?

Sorry gotta say the 6 having owed all three, 6 for shear sex appeal in side, if you want to get laid hmmmmm. E28 fro the ultimate Qcar and E34 for the best of everything.
For sale soon, 325 Touring (H) 1991 Jan. Auto 104K, silver BBS (black and silver) Mint sport interior. New front wings, very tidy, all bushes done front and back, Wheel bearings. Available this month. Email for further

Couldn't agree more there andy. but you still havent said which one you would choose?Argos wrote:E34's? Hmmm, gloss black with grey sills, narrow grille and the 17 inch throwing stars. That's nice. The wide grille ones look awful and the 18 inch wheels look wrong (too big).
M635CSi. A Dolphin grey Highline with the dechrome and BBS Splits is sex on wheels. Too many owners fit horrible aftermarket council rims. It's still an absolutely classic shape wheras the E28 is a bit gawky and the E34 slightly bland.
as an all rounder it has to be a 3.8 e34

£400 for a Six is 1600Kg of trouble. £5-£7k is nearer the mark for a hassle free life. Go the whole hog & get into 5 figures for a minter. M635's carry a £2k + premium but I think that's growing. They made less than 600 RHD & there's a few of those gone to the scrappy & a few have gone to Oz so they're getting rarer by the day.Firefly2005 wrote:Been looking at some of the 6 series on Ebay. Regular Highlines go fine. Can keep up with any E30 until the road gets too tight or you realise how much you're risking!
I'll vote for the M635 as I'm biased but full credit to the E34, I'd have that as my daily driver!
Just spent 2 hours washing and polishing the 6ix and cant beleive it would have been half as fun if it had just been an e34 under my sponge.
Washing a 6ix is much like making love to a beautiful woman..................an e34 feels more like a pro female wrestler!
