Sounds like one of my old ones. (exact spec, gearbox rebuild, powerflow etc). What's the reg out of interest?
I paid £2,200 for mine with 12k less on the clock.
You'd be better breaking it on the M5 board. Some surprising bits go for very good money.

thats a fair price.
problem is there are a fair few cheap ones to chose from. but people understand they still very expensive to look after properly. and probably also understand that most of the cheaper ones havent had the money spent on them for many years.
people in the market for an e34 m5, are the ones who want a late 3.8 model.

Not everyone wants a 3.8 Jon and I can understand why from other people's experiences.
The 3.8's have those very expensive EDC shocks which are a sickening £500 a corner.
The 3.8 engine is also a little more fragile than the 3.6 and there are a fair few cases of the engines going to motor heaven.
The 3.6's are alot more simple and still a serious weapon - you know this as you've had a couple yourself.
3.8's run on individual coils whereas the 3.6's are distributer. The ECU on the 3.8 is also more complex.
£3000 is a good price for a car with good mechanicals and but with a bit of bodywork required. A car with crap mechanicals is worth next to nothing.
Fowler's car has been with me for a while and before me Ste. Mechanically its a well sorted car and folwer's done a good job sorting the bodywork out after some tossers decided to break into it and ruin a few things.
Mileage is high but the paperwork clearly shows this car has sat on the motorway most of its life.
Its had SERIOUS money thrown at it.
Sounds very nice aswell!

Small world! that car's worth £3k - it's had loads spent on it and hides the miles very well. I understand you've now sorted the bodywork too - good on you.
I remember picking it up from Yorkshire and being pleasantly surprised on the way home that it spat flames.
It was definitely quicker than my next M5.
It'll show you 170 on the speedo easy-peasy. What else can you buy for that money that can do that?
Best of luck with the sale dude.
