thanks again all

have to say though, a massive thanks to Ant for replying to countless emails and helping me get my head around megasquirt n spark... I can honestly say it wouldn't be anywhere near running without you dude... megasquirt guru :notworthy:

2 things have come to light since it started up today... firstly it obviously won't idle because there's no idle bypass as i'm not using an ICV, need to have the throttle plate slightly open at idle. secondly, the current fuel map is the default one (for a small block V8 lol) so I've got a map from Ant to install tomorrow.

everyone welcome to a ride if i don't blow it up first!

can't wait to get driving :D sounds great just blipping the throttle, very very loud!

i reckon his first driving impressions will be smelly and left on the inside of his pants! :D winkeye

how are you going to handle the idle then? precise setting of the throttle butterfly or some form of ICV? this is something i was wondering about with FI setups...

:clin: :clin: :clin: :clin: :clin:

it likes Ant's turbo fuel map a bit better than the v8 one it came with

got it idling ok once warm now, and been for a little drive...

and yes christ almighty it's quick. even on part throttle and without revving hard. haven't let it go above 5psi yet... seems to spool up pretty early too, although i've not sorted the rev counter yet, only have the one displayed on the laptop.

sounds just fantastic when the turbo spools up, similarly good when the wastegate opens when backing off. only issue is there's (predictably) rather a lot of under bonnet heat around the turbo, despite the heatshield. thinking i may need a vent cutting which is a shame :(

is it worth trying again with the rear rubber seal removed? this should allow a lot more heat out and over the screen. some louvers (sp?) will be nicer than any max power vents should you need to go that way...

or how about lifting the rear of the bonnet, beetle/hot rod style?!!!

Exhaust wrap is good stuff but don't get the cheap stuff, it's crap and deteriates very quickly. ( I know this for a fact cos I'm a cheap ass )

You need the heavy braided stuff, usually £50 or so for 10m with clips etc, some have the spray sealer too.

Def time for a vid now toby!!

Well done again!

p.s. PBMW are calling your name now mate!

failed mot on bloody rear subframe bushes :x grrrr!

everything else passed though which is a relief :D

exhaust mani gasket's started blowing after i ragged it home a bit (ok a lot), but i'd re-used the old gaskets so no major surprise really. once it's mot'd i'll get the mani face machined flat and try it again...

only other issue is cooling (surprise surprise!). runs fine on the move, but doesn't like traffic much, i think the IC blocking the rad's airflow and the heat from the turbo's a bit too much. have removed the rear bonnet seal as suggested. but even with fan and heater running it's barely ok with the bonnet down idling!

Try the hot n high climate thermostat Toby, mine will idle in traffic for a good hour before moving above the centreline, thats with viscous still dude.

runs just above a quarter on the move, even when caning

Good cheap mod, brings the running temp down accross the board

Good news on the MOT , although subframe bushes with vertical movement are technically advisory only.

just the rear bushes? how frustrating!!!!!!!!!!!! did you get any raised eyebrows at the mot station?

do you have an oil cooler? that would be a worthwhile addition if you don't have one... just need to find somewhere to put it!!! that would help keep engine temps down, especially with the oil passing though your turbo and getting roasted before getting thrown bak into the sump

is the engine running hot (on the gauge) or is it mainly engine bay ambient temp that's the problem?

gauge just climbing beyond half way when idling. part of the problem is the kenlowe style fan doesn't blow half as hard as the old citroen one did :(

anyway when you open the bonnet it's fine with the fan going, except the exhaust side is like standing next to a furnace

if i cane it then get out and open the bonnet the exhaust mani glows near the turbo flange  how long will it last then lol

Ant, will try the thermostat, good tip dude.

Gareth - i got a raised eyebrow when the oil return dripped a little drop of red hot oil on the (bald) tester's head when up on the ramps. no wonder he found something to fail it on :D

hehe! sounds like he's not your new best mate! my mot bloke always moans that my cars leak all over his nice clean floor!

is your fan definately wired the right way? :D might seem silly but my BX twin fans were wired in the obvious red-red black-black convention but i forget that in the BX they sucked air through the 'rad fron the inside but in mine they blow from the outside! i noticed it was warm in front and the felt the fans blowing hot air out of the front drille!!!!! it was fine in traffic but overheated while driving!!!!!

i've just been out to look at mine and i reckon if you drilled an extra hole on the rear bonnet mounting track thingies you could lift the rear of the bonnet by 20-30mm. it may cool or daft... could be quite 70's street racer cool! this would give you a 1" x 36" vent at the top rear edge of the bay so should make quite a difference.

could also be worth trying taking the plastic shields behind the lights out...

oh, it is all bled right isn't it? the rads's been out etc hasn't it...
