ultimate engine in an e30 id say would be the new m5 V10. light smooth and awesome power.
but a fair bit cheaper would be an LS2 6.0ltr injected gm engine. good 300kw is a nice starting point for huge power....

How about an Audi 5 cylinder turbo engine? Can be had fairly cheaply, and with the right work can run a reliable and driveable 620bhp, going up to 900 for the extreme stuff. The 20v AAN will get 290 ish with just a chip, RS2 conversion will see 330 easily.
