Mate if they are not 100% flat they will leak! save wasting a gasket and get it machined first. I welded my 6 branch on an old head they all lifted and i have to run 2 gaskets with asembly paste between them.Toby_Unna wrote: flanges haven't stayed 100% true unfortunately but hopefully the gasket will sort this out... worst case have to machine it flat which won't be the end of the world.

Yeah, it shouldn't be difficult for a machine shop to skim that, there's lots of meat for them to hold onto
That manifold looks wicked too Toby!
How much boost you say you were gonna run ?

cool.
only thing is, do you reckon it's worth putting it on the car for a bit and running a few heat cycles through it first, before getting it machined?
don't wanna have to do it twice
Buster, cheers for the offer - on a rather tight schedule so hopefully get it done locally.

it depends how far its out, one i had with 1mm out at each end pulled flat fine, it wasnt warped much but it was a 1 piece stainless flange, yours are individual and its mild steel so should probly pull flat easier. The heat will release the stresses that warped it aswell so it might be easier to possibly waste a gasket and try it but it depends what its gona cost to skim it and how bad it is
dude what is up with your welder lol

£444? Bloody hell.
Fully comp?
Reputable insurer?
Voluntary excess less than £200?
Sheesh. Not much more than what I pay for my completely bone stock 325 Sport. And I have nearly ten years no claims, less than 6 points and an advanced driving test pass.
I hate you

classic policy from firebond. first company i tried!
tpft, all mods declared (with the usual sucking of breath lol), 3000 miles per year and requires me to have a second car. i'm nearly 25 with clean licence (1 sp30 5 years ago).
best thing is though, being classic all they ask is no recent claims, doesn't actually use my 7 yrs NCB. so i can use that to insure the 205diesel for about 20 quid a year with tesco

Im pretty sure he is using gasless cos you can see all the flux like with mma (stick) its never pretty with that stuff he can always sand it down and paint it black if it bothers him i guess, also he probly using a cheap mask with wrong filter so cant see shit which is why the runs are short.ollielsd wrote:dude what is up with your welder lol
Toby did you weld round the inside where the studs/bolts are?, in pics on outside it isnt welded there or is that just becuase it isnt finished yet.

Argon in the top pic hints at gas
but kudos to Toby, regardless of any opinions on the welding this is entirely his own work.
I hate Mig, does the job but soooo messy, still prefer gas with a no 2 nozzle , better still Tig but I'm a few bags shrt of one @ the mo

Will, it's actually a fairly powerful gas mig welder. hate gasless. and yes although there is some welding on the inside of the primaries, they aren't finished.
looks messy in the pics, bit better in reality. however there's decent heat penetration on all welds and i'll be surprised if it breaks. i couldn't give a f*ck what it looks like, have you seen the rest of the car!!
it's made out of a girder and a scaffold tube so it ain't going to be pretty...
Ant, how you fixed next week.

You must be an old skool welder then Ant![]()
Argon/Co2 mix is the best for MIG welding mild steel
Argon is for Ally
haven't used the the argon yet, it's apparently what i'm to use when i weld the stainless exhaust up

Chap at my local welding supplies centre said give it a go with the BOC argoshield on stainless because most of the time it works out fine. Other than the silencer splitting open, which I think is down to my bad design, it seems to be alright (so far)
I use CHUB CO2
on stainless never had a problem with a weak joint

for Mig I use C02/Argon mix, best overall gas, badly want a Tig though, spent 4.5 yrs working 10 hours a day tigging stuff @ my old firm, would be bloody useful now

few internal pics from yesterday - having a quick break from it as it's too bloody hot outside!
divider part welded

smoothing section added

nearly there...

just doing odds and sods today - finishing the wastegate-downpipe section, put the inlet side back together etc.

manifold sorted, cut one stub off and rewelded it carefully, now all six are nice and flat to within maybe 1/2 mm, result. exhaust all welded, so just need to bolt all this to the car now...
megasquirt's reading 240rpm when cranking, and it's giving a good spark too which is a good sign.
