You can find good 2nd hand ones as long as the person buying knows what they are looking for. Go for 325i ones from an Early car.

Get new piston rings.

Then get all your measurements (piston to valve clearance and cr) done - you'll then know how much to take off the block and how much to machine the piston skirts. Then put it together and enjoy a proper 2.7. Remember to lighten the flywheel while your at it.

Any good engineering place can do these calculations and machining for you.

Shouldn't necessarily be the pistons themselves at fault, more likely the rings which are about £90 a set (engine set that is)

Unfortunately there's no such thing as a cheap engine rebuild :(

You need gasket sets at about £250, big end bolts at about £40, timing belt kits for £40 (iirc), bearings for about £150, cylinder honing for I can't remember what, rings for £90, head (and block skimming in your case) for god knows how much, possibly new valve guides for about £150.

The list goes on and on if ya wanna do a proper job!

You gonna be a dad! Congrats dude.

Bexleys can do the calculations for you and arrange the machining.

You already know a bloke who can rebuild it for you at a reasonable cost.

What is your budget...absolute max?

I think the best way forward for you is to get some quotes from a few different places to do the whole job at once in one place.

You obviously dont want to piss about taking bits here and there.

I'll get you a price from bexleys, you'll save alot of money of you deliver the engine and pick it up rather than asking someone to do the installation for you.

I'm sure Demlot can ask Phil for a quote aswell. Phill will be able to do the whole job at once.

I think you can expect anywhere between £1000 - £1400 depending on which pistons you go for.

I say you do the whole thing properly and get a nice phat powerful engine.

Quaser's engine uses 325i machined pistons with a CR of 10.5:1 and its very very powerful already and its not even been fully mapped yet.

Good point!!

vernier pulley essential. Add around £130 for one of those from Kent cams.
