can anyone advise me what to do.

first of all the car has been sitting for about 10 months went to use the sunroof over the weekend but wasn't working-fuse ok-checked for power and so there was no power so i bypassed it so the motor started working.
the roof now only goes up and doesn't drop down and slide back.

if anyone could help it will most be appreciated

Find this is fairly common on E30s that I buy. Simple lack of lubrication!
First of all, put back together whatever you've done to the electrics. Fuses 17 and 28 are for the roof.
Next, remove the access cover over the motor, and use your spark plug spanner to slacken off the big hex nut you can see a couple of turns.
Next, take the allen key from the tool kit and insert one end of it into the shaft in the middle of the nut.
Then, using the allen key as a handle, work the mechanism manually over and back, a little at a time, assisting the roof with your other hand, until you get it working.

What part of the roof should be lubricated then to stop this happening?

Is it just the runners or the mechanism aswell??

It will if you persist at it, and assist the roof with your other hand.

I don't know if this is what you're experiencing, but my sunroof gets stuck when trying to move it back. As it comes down to slide under the roof, it somehow catches the metal of the roof and pulls it down slightly meaning that it can't slide under it but instead is pushing against it. I find that pressing the switch to move it back, then when it's stuck tapping the switch in the other direction ever so slightly allows the roof to pop up (audibly) and then the sunroof can slide back under it.
