I think my m40 touring is running a bit hot, but the temp guage dont seem to go above half. (possibly faulty??)
Just when you stop you can hear all the metal expanding/contracting etc, normaly that would not bother me but it does it for aaaaaages.
can i take a reading with a multimeter on the temp sensor and what should it be ???

Have you checked your coolant level? If its too low the gauge won't work. Also check your fan works properly. (dunno if its a viscous fan on the M40, but I'm sure someone more knowlegable will be along soon).m-dtech wrote:I think my m40 touring is running a bit hot, but the temp guage dont seem to go above half. Then check the water pump, does the coolant in the expansion tank bubble about if you start the car with the cap off? (Start it from cold, for a couple of minutes and don't touch the cap when the engine is still hot).
Sorry if this is sucking eggs type stuff, but you can't be too careful....

Odds on there is nothing wrong with your car at all. I've never seen a gauge that stops at half way, and the chances of this weird fault happening at the same time as a overheating fault is extremely small.
if you're not convinced, take of the centre grill, block the radiator with paper, and let the engine idle. You'll soon see the temp go up!
When you're convinced, pull off the paper and let the engine cool a bit before you stop it.

Mike-I did a coolant change on the touring (m20) yesterday, new thermostat, bled it all up lovely, and gave it a good caining.
Temp never went above 1/2 way whilst moving, but once stopped, It rose to just below 3/4 due to the reduced airflow (fan running at 1krpm, rather than 4krpm and air forced in front of car)
2 mins later sitting at idle and it was back to 1/2. Personally I wouldnt worry about it too much, hell you have a spare top end available too
