Just had a call from a mate(BIGTKB from the zone)!
Need some advice to give to him when he rings me back at tea time.

Ok,description as he told me;

Car was driving fine,gears smooth and not notchy,although very slack/sloppy gearstick?
Put it in reverse,made his move then went to put it in neutral.
Stick seemed tight but did move-problem now is the gearstick is slighty off centre and the car is still locked in reverse???????

Anyone experienced similar problem?
Is it likely to be the gearbox itself or linkage problem?

Hes ringing me back later so anything i can pass on to him would be a big help!

Sounds like the linkage rod that goes from the bottom of the gearsick to the gearbox is broken or has came loose.
This happened to me last year but I had the opposite - I couldn't engage reverse. The cause of the problem happened weeks before when my prop centre bearing was shagged and the propshaft had been making contact with the selector rod almost wearing right through the metal. It took a few weeks of gearchanging for it to finally snap. hth

Either the linkage plastic balljoint is shot (cheap fix, but bit of a hassle to replace), or something in the linkage in the box broke and your mate is fscked.
